"What you need, what we all need is silence. Stop the noise in your mind in order for the wondrous sounds of life to be heard. Then you can begin to live your live authentically and deeply."

- Thich Nhat Hanh

Hello Beautiful Soul,

Often in our hectic lives, we forget to stop and use our powerful inner resource — silence — to bring calm in the chaos.

This is what the famous Vietnamese monk and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh talks about in his book “Silence – The Power of Quiet in a World Full of Noise.”

It is a book on mindfulness, and a refreshing one at that, as it not only emphasizes the importance of silence, but also provides guidance on how to easily practice it in our lives.

He says,

“We spend a lot of our lives searching for happiness, running from one thing to another, worrying about the past and being anxious about the future.

All the while the world around us is overflowing with the wonder and contentment we seek.

This beauty calls to us every day, yet we are rarely in a position to listen.

If we don’t have silence in ourselves - if our minds and our bodies are full of noise - then we can’t hear beauty’s call.

The basic condition for us to hear the call of beauty, and respond to it, is silence.

With mindfulness comes stillness - and the silence we need to come back to ourselves and discover who we are and what we truly want - the keys to happiness and well-being.

The practice of mindfulness is very simple.

You come home to yourself so that you can enjoy the here and now in every moment.”

How can one incorporate

more silence into their daily life?

What was truly engaging about this book was that, apart from the wisdom, the author easily outlines ways in which you can incorporate silence into your daily life.

I’ve compiled a few for you here:

1. Try to visualize a calm environment.

For me, it's a moment when I was sitting by the beach watching the sunset.

Whenever you feel anxious, try to go back to this exact calm environment and stay there for a while.

2. As soon as you wake up, smile and feel happy about one more day that you've been granted to live on this planet.

Take a deep breath, and sit for 5 minutes in silence, just focusing on your breath.

In just a few minutes of breathing mindfully, we can awaken to the fact that we're alive - we're breathing in, we're breathing out.

We are here.

3. Take a walk and count your steps.

As you walk, don’t think about anything else - just free your mind and count your steps.

Walking is a wonderful way to clear the mind.

In order to really enjoy the steps you take while walking, allow your mind to completely let go of any worry or plan.

You just walk, and while you're focusing on walking, joy and awareness come naturally.

The author talks about many such examples in which you can integrate silence into your life.

This not only makes your life better, but also improves the lives of those around you.

I’m glad I added this book to my library, and I recommend getting it if you’re interested in learning more.

I encourage you to think about how you can slow yourself down, and create more mindful moments in your day.
