FALL 2020

Welcome fall! And welcome to the "new normal." The good news is YPL is up and running! There may be limited hours at this time, but don't be fooled. Our dedicated librarians are working harder than ever to keep us safe from COVID 19 and to keep us supplied with books, DVDs, CDs, and virtual programs! Have a great fall and stay safe.
                                                                 Lee Peters, Editor, The Yardarm

During This "New Normal" Creativity Reigns At YPL

"...we have been grateful for the community's support
              during this challenging period."

By Dinah Wolff, President

I often look back at these letters to see what I wrote at the same time in previous years. Frequently, the same events are mentioned, chairpersons, degree of success, etc. Unfortunately, this year I am not reporting on our Annual July Book Sale, cancelled for the same reason all our other scheduled events have been put off - the pandemic that in March halted all library activity.

In past years, a Plant Sale has been held along with our July Book Sale. Thinking that boxed books would promote too much browsing togetherness, we instead expanded plants into space formerly devoted to book tables, offering more inventory than in past years. Thanks again this year to Sally Hockenbury, who not only organizes this sale, but also tends donations made ahead of time in her own garden. We had lots of variety and many buyers, all in all, a great success, and a welcome diversion at a time when little was happening locally.

Library activity has picked up in the past month, with patrons now allowed in the building. While our open hours are temporarily reduced, it's been gratifying to see such happy faces as people are once again granted access to our collection. While downloading one's reading has been a lifesaver, it's clear that for many, browsing for and holding a real book is a preferred choice.

When you read this, we will be six months into the "new normal." Book quarantining has meant slightly longer waits, but on a positive note, we are happy to see our staff again able to welcome the public into the building. As you'll read elsewhere in this newsletter, they have come up with some creative ways to engage patrons during a time when we're still unable to meet for group programs. Everyone looks forward to a safe return to larger gatherings, when we can resume working together to offer the events we all miss. Until then, we have been grateful for the community's support during this challenging period.

Check The Website For The Latest YPL Info

Please note: During this "new normal" there is always the possibility of changes to the way the library may operate. Please visit the library's website, yarmouthportlibrary.org, for the most up-to-date information.

Not only will you find the latest YPL information but you might be surprised at the array of links to various other websites, not to mention information on the innovative projects that our creative librarians have come up with!

Love A Good Mystery? Zoom in!

In the mood for a good mystery?

The Classic Mystery Seminar planned for this fall, (and mentioned in the last Yardarm), has been postponed indefinitely because of Covid 19...BUT... for mystery buffs...put on your best Jane Marple or Hercule Poirot hat and join an improvisational mystery creation.

This event is being hosted by Jeanette de Beauvoir, a Cape Cod mystery author and teacher, and will be presented via Zoom on
Friday afternoon, October 23rd.

We are trying to provide a program in this time of quarantine which will be quite different from our usual offerings. All the participants will decide the elements of a good mystery and work them into a semi-coherent story. Throughout this fun exercise, Jeanette will be explaining the inclusion of these parts into an actual mystery story.

Information for joining this Zoom program will be sent via Constant Contact much closer to the time. Call the library to be certain you will get what is needed to join. Save the date for a fun afternoon.

Chapter One...Let's Begin

It's the YPL Chapter ONE Project
         for adults, kids, everyone!

We have created a new program, which we hope all will participate in...adults, kids, everyone. The YPL Chapter ONE Project started as a simple idea to get people interested in books that they might not naturally select and to give a little taste of the variety of books in the YPL collection. We are asking patrons and community members to record the first chapter only of a book that they have enjoyed and want to share.

It is very simple and easy...no Zoom meeting skills involved, no mask wearing, no social distancing, just simply downloading a recording application for your phone, hand-held or computer (Easy Voice Recorder or Voice Recorder) and recording Chapter ONE. Please provide your name, affiliation with YPL (if you would like), the title and author of the book, the age group the book is appropriate for, and any comments you feel are relevant about your reason for selecting the book. Once your recording meets your satisfaction, please email it along to us at yarp_mail@clamsnet.org. The recording will be uploaded to our website in the Chapter ONE Project section, alphabetical by title and author (and listing the reader's name and appropriate age group).

Please visit our website, or click here, for more details about the Chapter ONE Project, and listen to recordings already submitted by library staff and a few members of the YPL community. Happy reading AND recording!

Welcome Back To Your Village Library!

YPL is thriving and we look forward to seeing you in
person, on Zoom or just a quick wave
               from the front porch!

By Leslie Altman, Librarian

We are so pleased to be able to welcome you back to our village library. As a former teacher, I always loved autumn because it meant new beginnings. This year beginnings are more uncertain. Although we are still masking up and socially distancing, we are delighted that we can see at least part of your faces and your smiling eyes as you come inside or wave from the porch.

New Items: New items are arriving in bunches. I hope you will consult the lists of new items here in The Yardarm as well as those posted in the library. These lists are meant to alert you to what has been ordered. Book publishers have delayed many items because of COVID, and many DVD release dates have been pushed back because many films have not yet been released to the theaters. We will do our best to make the latest offerings available, and we want to hear from you if you know of an item you want us to purchase. As always, when YPL items are requested by YPL patrons, our patrons go to the front of any waiting list. I am completely delighted when I get to tell a patron that their item is waiting for them on its release date!

Chapter One Project: The YPL Chapter ONE Project is for adults as well as children. It is a virtual analogue of our "YPL Favorites" cart, but now, you can listen to the first part of a book to see if you would like to check it out. Please see the separate article in this issue for additional details.

Book Group: The book group has managed to keep going during the pandemic. We had three Zoom meetings in the spring after the library closed in March. Our "summer reading group" consisted of two socially distanced meetings, one in July and one in August, at which we talked about our summer reading recommendations. After the July meeting, we compiled a list of books recommended by the people who attended or who emailed titles. Please pick up a copy of the list or ask for one to be put out curbside for you. We always welcome new members, but you do not have to attend meetings to get a list of recommendations. You can also join a Zoom meeting just to listen...no speaking up required!

Our book for September is The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson. The author has a new book, Caste, published in August. Both are timely and beautifully written nonfiction about our shared history. Please join our virtual meeting the third Thursday in September. I would love to "see" you. Directions will be on our website or you can join our book group Constant Contact list. Just call or email for more information. Our October selection is The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich and November's is The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson. No meeting in December. Pick up a handout about the book group in the library or on the porch.

In October a book group favorite and local author, Jeannette de Beauvoir, will be returning virtually to the library for a special program involving the audience in writing a mystery. Look for more information on this event elsewhere in The Yardarm. It should be lots of fun!

Reading Room: Some Reading Room shelves have a new look. We have brought the Edward Gorey collection into the Reading Room, making it more visible and more accessible, and we hope you will sample some of the quirky work of one of Yarmouth Port's most famous residents. Borrow a book (some suitable for children) from the collection in order to get to experience Gorey's artistic sensibility and unique sense of humor.

You can also check out passes for the Edward Gorey House museum, which is open until December, though weekends only in November and December. Check their website for current hours: edwardgoreyhouse.org

We have moved our little-used reference books into the regular nonfiction collection. The only items that do not circulate now are the Historic Collection in the Reading Room. You are welcome to use those special books in the building. We hope that those who are interested in genealogy will make use of ancestry.com, which you can find on the public computers, as well as other resources available both in the Reading Room and upstairs in the Genealogy Room.

Gale Reading Room: Finally, if you are looking for a quiet place to read, look out the window, or simply "smell the flowers," the Gale Reading Room located in the rear of the library is ready for you. It is a welcoming space for enjoying the library and browsing through our nonfiction section.

We welcome you back with pleasure and are eager to serve your library needs. Thanks to you, our dedicated band of volunteers, and our hardworking trustees, YPL is thriving!

Programs for Children and Families

       Welcome fall and welcome back!

by Carrie Bearse, Assistant Librarian/Children's Services

It is so hard to believe that fall has arrived...what a surreal, interesting, and ultimately hopeful summer. It was so wonderful to welcome back patrons to the Yarmouth Port Library in July, and especially to see the families who have visited the somewhat simplified children's room (with toys and games put away to promote efficient visits and an easily cleanable environment). To see children looking for books and asking about different subjects and authors, is really a dream come true for a children's services librarian, which is certainly a dream job to begin with!

Thank you to the families who have enjoyed the Rainy Day Reads on the website (just a reminder that there are three versions of each book available - story-time, close-up, and self-reader), liked our Facebook page posts, dropped off fabulous Summer Color artistic creations to beautify the library, and participated in our READ 4 summer reading program.

As the fall brings us cooler weather and perhaps more freedom and comfort, I would like to start an outside story time, so please let me know if you would be interested. I know these are uncertain times, but I would love to know how best to serve the children and families of this community, so please let me know, AND I will keep asking, too.

I regularly order new, recommended, and well-reviewed children's books; but if you have any special suggestions, please send them my way. I am particularly interested in adding to our juvenile non-fiction section. Also, I am constantly weeding the children's books, so if you come across a book that is damaged or not in the shape it should be; please do not hesitate to let us know.

We have created a new program, which we hope all will participate in...kids, adults, and everyone in-between. The YPL Chapter ONE Project started as a simple idea to get people interested in books that they might not naturally select and to give a little taste of the variety of books in the YPL collection. We are asking patrons and community members to record the first chapter only of a book that they have enjoyed and want to share. Please visit our website for more details about the Chapter ONE Project, and listen to recordings already submitted by library staff and a few members of the YPL community. It would be wonderful to have some children and young adults record a favorite first chapter for this project!

On a final note, just as it has been wonderful to welcome patrons back to the library, it has been a thrill to welcome back our fabulous, skilled, friendly, and essential volunteers! They truly are the best, and we could not serve you as well as we do without their commitment and dedication. It is my pleasure to work with them and especially to get to know them.

So, welcome fall and welcome back! One of our longtime volunteers said recently that she couldn't wait to get back to our "candy on the checkout counter days", neither can I. We will get there eventually, but in the meantime stay safe, keep reading, try recording a chapter for our Chapter ONE Project, and know that we are so happy to be here for you.

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson

Shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

It is a story of political brinkmanship, but it's also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill's prime-ministerial country home, Chequers; his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage go when the moon is brightest and the bombing threat is highest; and of course 10 Downing Street in London.
