Josie's Village Brings Joy to Over 134 Seniors
Josie’s Village holiday planning committee brought some holiday cheer to the senior residents at Life Care Center in West Bridgewater. With help from volunteers and the local community, Josie’s Village achieved its Christmas commitment. On December 18th, the hardworking providers hand-delivered gift bags to all 134 senior residents at the Life Care Center.
Josie’s Village is a non-profit volunteer program that works with the WB Senior Center and the Bridgewater Council on Aging (COA). Josie’s Village is dedicated to encouraging and developing meaningful friendships between passionate volunteers and seniors within the community. In addition to its 34 seniors, Josie’s Village decided to extend its generosity this holiday season to include the patients and residents at Life Care Center.
With tremendous support from volunteers and support from the local community, Josie’s Village was able to package and deliver over 136 gift bags to seniors. Their hard work and dedication are a true display of compassion and generosity this holiday season. Proving that sometimes it takes a village.

Historical Tidbit:
January 1:
Born 1735: Paul Revere ~ silversmith, engraver, and patriot from Boston who alerted the militia of the arrival of British troops
Born 1752: Betsy Ross ~ sewed the first United States flag
1818 – Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley publishes the world’s first science fiction novel: Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus

The use of a baby as a personification of the new year has been traced to ancient Greece, where an infant in a basket was paraded around to mark the annual rebirth of Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility.
Sometimes accompanied by Father Time, “Baby New Year” has appeared in banners, cartoons, posters, and cards for several hundred years."

41st Annual Christmas Sharing Program
With tremendous help from the community, St. Ann’s First Church and Cochesett Methodist accomplished a phenomenal task. The Christmas Sharing Program brings holiday cheer to children, families, senior citizens, teen moms, and their babies. This was the program's 41st year, and an immense amount of generosity made this one of the program's most successful years. The program was able to bring joy to 35 families, 93 children, 59 senior citizens, 25 teen mothers, and their 32 babies.
Through donations made by the parishioners of St. Ann’s First Church, Cochesett Methodist, local businesses, and residences, all 244 recipients were brought some extra joy this Christmas. Families received $125 in gift cards, an additional $50 for groceries, and toys for the kids. Teen moms received $50 gift cards, a blanket sleeper, clothing, hats and gloves, and toys for their babies. Senior citizens received a bag of goodies and $50 gift cards, and 25 received a granny square afghan from the ladies at the Council on Aging.
A thank you to all the local businesses, organizations, and families for coming through with an amazing $8915, Garvey Transportation, Raleigh Auto Body, Peter O’Connor (South Shore Supply), P & Amp; H Travel Inc., W.B. Fire Department, W.B. Police Department, Walter Thayer (Hockomock Liquors), Southeast Cyclones Youth Hockey Bingo, Rotary Club of the Bridgewater, Wheels of Time and several families for their generous donations through the WB Emergency Fund. The local Girl Scout troop donated four cases of cookies. St. Ann’s Bingo, and three other churches for making up the rest of the funds, and the rest of the local community for all they have done to make this miracle possible.
A special thanks to all the elves for organizing, supplying, and delivering gifts.
Thank you also to anyone else who contributed. Whether you donated gift cards, made a cash donation, gave gifts or toys, or just contributed your time. Know that your effort and support are greatly appreciated, and this miracle would not have been possible without you.

Climate Can Do:
Eco-Friendly Gifting
This holiday season, let’s give our communities the gift of zero waste! Here are a few things to look out for and a few tips for giving (and wrapping) earth-conscious presents:
Shop recyclable: most shiny wrapping paper and glittery cards are not recyclable. Try brown or recycled paper or reusable fabric totes or sacks.
Save energy: holiday lights make wonderful decor, but we should be mindful of their impact on the environment. Keeping your lights on a timer or setting aside time to turn them off can save you money on your electric bill and energy. Also, consider what types of lights you’re using. LED lights consume up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent lights and last 10 times longer. Switching to LEDs will reduce your carbon footprint and present a lesser risk of fire.
Eliminate excess: a family game of Secret Santa is not only fun and personal but can save you from buying a gift or two for everyone at the party. Additionally, if you are careful with your decor and the wrappings you receive with presents, they can save you time, money, and waste for next Christmas! Reuse and upcycle decor, wrapping, ribbons, string, and even Christmas cards, which can be cut up to make tags.
Buy Local: save time, get personalized attention, and make someone's dreams come true, spend your holiday dollars at a small, local business.

New Grant Opportunity
The Taunton River Stewardship Council is proud to offer the River Stewardship Grant Program. The grant supports towns that are looking to improve river access by addressing woody obstructions in the rivers.
Large fallen trees and branches hinder fish passage and lead to flooding. East Bridgewater is the first recipient and was awarded $4,500 to address obstructions on the Satucket River.
To discuss a project idea, email Coordinator Gloria Bancroft at director@savethetaunton.org
