2 Minutes of Sacred Silence

(Lectio Divina)

Beloved Friends,

What a blessing it was to see so many of you on the Ash Wednesday Zoom call yesterday. Whether you were able to join us live or not, we are all connected through the Spirit as we dive into this Lenten practice of deepening quiet. CLICK HERE for the recording of yesterday's Welcome Gathering that you can watch at your own convenience.

Today we gently lengthen our silence to 2 minutes.

I invite you to explore the practice of Lectio Divina (sacred reading) as the focus for your silent prayer.

Lectio Divina is an invitation to read slowly, savor the words, and listen with your heart. Perhaps a particular word (or short phrase) might stand out or shimmer for you when you read it - take note and pray for clarity about why God might have drawn your attention to that particular word. If no single word or phrase stands out, then simply soak in the beauty of the whole reading and let its broader meaning wash over you.

Allow these words to be your companion as you pray. Read them aloud. Hold them gently on your heart. Chat with God about what they might mean for you today. You can journal briefly about your reflections if you feel so moved. But, most importantly, keep it simple. Don't overthink - this is a spiritual practice of the heart, not the head. Simply be still and know that God is with you. Understanding comes slowly (if at all!). Be patient and trust in the slow work of God.

Here is today's Lectio Divina suggestion for your 2 minutes of silence...

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Matthew 11: 28-30 (The Message)

Be encouraged in your gently growing practice of silent prayer as you tune out the noise around you and tune in to God's Presence. Remember that you are part of a broad and beloved community of faithful folks who are also nurturing the gifts of simplicity and stillness this Lenten season. Let us lift one another in prayer as we journey together into the deepening quiet...

Your Companion in Silence,

Sharon
