Library Support Stand-Out Stands Out
On Monday, August 10, 2026, the Bridgewater Board of Trustees, the Friends & Supporters of the Bridgewater Public Library and Bridgewater Communities for Civil Rights hosted a stand-out in support of the Bridgewater Public Library.
From 5 to 6 p.m. the community, young and old, gathered in front of the Academy Building and Bridgewater Public Library. Holding up homemade signs and yelling out chants, the crowd gained cheers and honks in support from passersby.
Held in response to the threat of state decertification, the Bridgewater Public Library emphasized in a post, "Every person who shows up sends a message that our library is worth investing in."
The stand-out can be measured as a success not only due to the size of the crowd, but by the might of the many voices heard.
As the Bridgewater Public Library states, "Strong libraries build strong communities," a sentiment that was evidently proven on the sunny evening of Monday, August 10.

Historical Tidbit:
The L. Q. White Shoe Factory
At one time, Bridgewater had a thriving shoe industry. By 1930, L.Q. White was running two of Bridgewater's four factories, employing over 5,000 workers and producing thousands of pairs of shoes each day. Trains would bring workers from both north and south of town. The White factory, located on Spring Street in what is now the college parking area, was closed due to union problems following a strike by some workers in 1933. The building was last used as a huge chicken farm until it burned in 1962. Bridgewater's shoe industry finally came to a close in 1993.

~ Alice Walker
“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” ~ Mark Twain
