The President's Corner

Laura McMillan, President

Aloha! I have just returned from my first visit to our members in Hawaii. It was great to meet so many members in person. We hosted a gathering of members and heard from the State’s Chief Economist, Dr. Eugene Tian. He shared many interesting facts about Hawaii. The economic recovery data shows that Hawaii lags behind every state except North Dakota when it comes to pandemic recovery. Thankfully the construction business is booming, but tourism, especially tourism from Japan and South Korea, has been slower to recover. Our members in the hospitality group confirmed that this has been their experience. It was really interesting to see the data and hear the explanations.

At the Western Credit Conference in October, I touched on our need to learn from each of you about your experience with NACM. I shared a bit about developing a strategic plan and asked for input from the members through a member survey.

I thought you might like to know what we learned from that survey:

  • First, the survey confirmed that our members come from companies of all sizes – from under $5 million up to $5 billion. Just about every industry was represented, with a number of respondents from Building & Construction and from Manufacturing. Smaller percentages were from retail, hospitality and transportation.
  • 65% of the people who answered the survey have been in the credit management field for more than 10 years. About 30% have been here less than 5 years.
  • When we asked which NACM benefits were most important, education was #1, but followed very closely by credit reports, collections and industry group meetings.
  • It was good to see that 100% of respondents know how to get help from NACM when they need it, and the large majority said they always get help quickly.
  •  Almost everyone says they prefer email for communications, and claim to read what we send. Thank you for that!
  • Only about half said that they attend the monthly webinars. If that’s due to timing, don’t forget that you can find the recording on the website to watch later.
  • And wow! You are all dealing with big pressing issues. Process improvement got the most votes, with automation, fraud and collections close behind.
  • 91% of you said you would recommend NACM to another company. In the world of net promoter scores, that’s actually a pretty good score. I hope that each of you is recommending NACM when you get a chance.

That’s a little bit about what we learned. If you completed the survey, please know that we really appreciate it!

We want to be the best professional association for you and provide you with benefits you truly value. We don’t want to make decisions about what that looks like without your input.

Because we would like to get input from even more of you, I am happy to share that NACM staff will be calling each of our member representatives in April.

We will have a few questions to ask you, and promise to not take too much of your time. This is your chance to influence your association and help provide direction for its future. Thank you in advance! We are looking forward to talking with each of you!

Board Elections

Coming Soon

Our annual rite of passage to determine who will be guiding our association for the next few years is coming next week. The NACM BCS Board of Directors has approved a slate of three candidates which will be presented to members for your consideration and vote. There has been a great deal of work put into recruiting new Directors who know and understand the credit profession, and are enthusiastic about serving the best interests of the association and its membership. Most of them are under 40 which we are excited about.

The primary representative of each member company will be receiving an electronic ballot via email on Monday, March 10th. Open it, review the candidates and cast your vote. It's as simple as that! Your involvement as a member of NACM Business Credit Services is important to our local as well as national work on behalf of the credit profession. Please look for ballot coming soon.

Thanks for participating!
