Finding Fall Color
“November is a sigh; a sigh of weariness after the tumult of summer, a sigh of resignation over projects yet undone, a sigh of regret for hopes unfulfilled,” wrote Lois Nestel, the Museum’s founding director. Not much has changed in the intervening decades. As our vision is filled by low light, gray skies, and bare trees, keeping a cheerful attitude can feel like a challenge.

My solution? Go outside anyway. Nothing improves my mood like fresh air and exercise. Besides, hot chocolate and cookies taste so much better once they’ve been earned.

101 Uses for Newspaper
Collecting mutes (the technical term for bird waste) to make cleaning a breeze:
  1. Inside travel crates
  2. On the mew floor, especially in the winter when the hose is frozen
  3. Under Aldo's indoor perch, for when it's too cold for him to be outside

Enrichment toys provide opportunities for playing, grabbing, and shredding:
  1. Crafting origami flowers
  2. Tying paper "rope" around perches
  3. Hiding food inside a paper "burrito"
  4. Stuffing paper strips into a rubber ball
  5. Using a strip of paper to tie a quail wing to a perch
  6. Wrapping a sheet of paper around a perch to create a new texture
  7. Crumpling into a ball and watch Haley try to juggle

Got Newspaper?
This is just the beginning of countless ways we use newspaper to take care of our raptors. And now that winter has set in, we're using even more of it! If you have a stack of newspapers piling up at home and would like to donate some to the birds, email Haley .

The Critters We Catch
Every couple of months, I move methodically throughout the Museum building in scientific pursuit. I scrutinize the nooks and crannies of my colleagues' offices, crawl behind stacks of ladders towards a dusty corner in the multi-purpose workroom, and get on my hands and knees as I stretch to grasp small, cardboard contraptions behind a stove, copying machine, and bathroom shelf. Put more simply, I am checking our insect sticky traps.
