I’ve learned my business is supposed to be “nimble and agile” and that includes the EGuide (being on brand etc.). I guess it reflects the editor. Interpret either way you choose.

Just in case you missed the last edition, here is a link to it for you

Got a question? Want me to find something for you? Did you get this forwarded to you? If you would like to be on the list, text MEETGUIDE to 22828. Or just sign up here online !

Things that interest me….
and maybe you!

Why Are Dressers Vanishing from Hotel Rooms? Condé Nast Traveler

I get it, but if I am staying more than 2 nights, I really like to unpack. I even saw this recently in an extended stay hotel, and there were two of us, for five nights…
The fastest-disappearing hotel amenity out there.

Travel writer Rick Steves explains self-imposed $1M carbon tax, where that money is going USA TODAY

I have been in a lot of conversations this past two weeks on sustainability and how meetings and events are both effected and affect. It’s a circle. Someone asked me how carbon offset worked. Here is a great article about how one company is stepping up to make a difference, not because they have to legally, but they feel they must ethically.

The flight pattern of a 747 on its final journey made a plane: See El Al's 'sky painting' USA TODAY

Very cool…make your mark (safely)…
On Sunday, El Al retired its final Boeing 747 with a giant Etch-a-sketch-in-the-sky tribute, using the flight path to draw the plane. Watch it happen.

Two articles on passports and visas…. And how does this effect our meetings and events?

Americans can easily travel almost anywhere — except here CNN

If you're carrying an American passport, you can travel most of the world easily, except for a handful of places. These are the hardest countries for Americans to visit.

And the Most Powerful Passports…and no the US is not in the top three..

Simultaneous Translation PCMA

I recently got to connect 2 of my friends, Kate Sarasin, CMP and Cara Angeles, CMP, for some conversation on simultaneous translation. Made me wonder how many of us have every used it, seen it or had questions on it. Located this article from a few years back, but the principles have not changed.

New! Gift Cards !

Ever wish you could have some help paying for your CMP class? Or have the money to have The Guidance Counselor for Grown Ups (that’s the other part of me) work with you?

Now –your friends and family have the opportunity to help you move forward. Yep—I now have gift cards. They can be applied to anything I provide. It may not be as glamorous as a piece of jewelry, or as delicious as a drink at your favorite coffee place---but it will help you get to where you want to go.

Here’s the link, and let me know if you have questions!

Men's Slip-On Shoes That Are Practically Made For Getting Through Airport Security Condé Nast Traveler

Yes---finally I have found a shoe article for men! I haven’t been ignoring you, it is just not the easiest thing to find at times.
From Vans sneakers to a classic pair of penny loafers.

Medication—we worry about our own, but frequently in our industry we also worry about attendees and guests. Here are two articles that may help. I have seen things about medication posted in the “Know Before You Go”, especially for international travel.
What to Do If You Forget or Lose Medication While Traveling Travel + Leisure

Refilling a prescription can be tricky when you're abroad. Here's what to do.

What You Need to Know About Bringing Medicine on a Plane AAA

Make traveling with medications easier by planning ahead, learning airport rules and following them

Two articles on what not to wear to the airport—no matter how stylish you want to be. This does not say wear your pajamas however----but I am sure no one reading this would think to do that—right? (Taking your kids in the pajamas is a whole other thing.) I have made a big switch this year in what I wear to fly and I am so much more comfortable, and still look very presentable, in fact maybe more so than when I wore jeans.

I Travel a Lot, But I Still Make These 5 Airport Outfit Mistakes Who What Wear

My problem is that I tend to prioritize looking stylish over being comfortable, so I'm constantly reminding myself to heed my own advice. (I promise you, both are possible.)

9 Things We Regret Wearing to the Airport Who What Wear

Collectively as a team of editors, we've traveled a ton since the start of 2018. Some of us even hop on more than 30 flights in the span of a year, and others have traveled to over 30 countries.

This packing tip will change your life Escape

I’m totally into the spreadsheet idea although I would have to work on that. I have had a list on my computer for over 10 years. Saves so much stress. And I don’t do carry on, only checked, but I still like anything that makes packing easier.
This secret packing weapon is simpler than you’d think, but a life changer. Here’s what a travel guru, who take 100 flights annually, swears by.

11 Best Garment Bags So You Never Show Up With Wrinkled Clothes
Condé Nast Traveler

These are really cool and different. I just think I would really want to touch and play with one before deciding which one I wanted.
Say goodbye to wrinkled dresses and suits.

My thanks to the Seaview, A Dolce Hotel in New Jersey for hosting my Intensive Class Nov 2 & 3. Here's a picture of the fun we had.

Testimonial

"I have to say that the two days with you was the best professional development anything I've ever done. Not only did I get excited about the CMP exam, but I got so excited that it helped remind and reassure me that I'm in the right place and the right profession. Huge HUGE impact! I seriously think you are one of the very best speakers and presenters - and your depth of knowledge and expertise, combined with a really giving spirit - doesn't get any better than that."
Kristina

Did you take the CMP in 2014? 2009? 2004? 1999?

It is your year to re-certify—DO NOT miss it! You must complete your 25 continuing education hours by December 31 or you cannot re-certify. And I know you don't want to take the test again.

Other things…

My Graduate Students are looking for Internships!

All of us had someone who gave us an opportunity to start and to move up in our career. I am asking you to pay it forward. This is about impacting the future of the industry.

I have 20 students in my class all of whom are required to do a 400 hour internship between January and May (a few in the summer). I would estimate most of them are between 24-27 years old, meaning these are people who have some life experience. About half have between 1-3+ years in the industry, between internships and paid positions. The other half are transitioning into hospitality, but some of those students have had paid positions in under industries.

Their interests and studies have been everything from Marketing, Financial Analysis, Operations—and Meetings and Events. Boston area would be their first choice, many are open to other areas of the United States, and potentially other countries. There is a longer post on LinkedIn or email me if you have any possibilities. joanne@joannedennison.com

MPI has a call for speakers for WEC 2020 (June)

In Grapevine, TX. Submissions are due November 18, 2019 ---guess I better get working!

Here's What Stops Most People From Reaching Their Full Potential--and How You Can Avoid Getting Stuck Inc.

Anyone heard of, or remember The Peter Principle. I remember it being discussed in our house when I was a kid. “People rise to their level of incompetence”. Excellent article.

I’m sensing a theme here…and although I have improved exponentially, I have certainly been called out (even by myself) for overthinking things.

How to Negotiate Your Salary—a four-week plan to get you going. Well & Good

Yes, this is written heavily for a woman’s perspective, but that does not mean it does not apply to anyone. How many people really are comfortable asking for a raise in a non-emotional (pick any emotion) way?

Why You Should Always Hire the Best Candidates (and Not Just Those Who Fit the Job) Inc.

This has got to be one of the most interesting articles I have read about hiring. For some of you who have gone through job searches, and known (honestly) that you were more qualified than someone who was hired, this will be enlightening. Are you a “safe” hire?
