May 2025 NEWSLETTER

Dear CDOC Community,

May is Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, an annual opportunity to raise awareness about melanoma and skin cancer, as well as focus on research into their cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. Read more about the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month Campaign from our partners at GW Cancer Center here.

May is also Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month. Check out the Cancer Facts & Figures for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, & Other Pacific Islander People from our partners at the American Cancer Society(ACS). The report overviews risk factors, screening, and cancer occurrence for disaggregated Asian American and Pacific Islander ethnic groups in the United States. In 2021, approximately 24 million Asian American and 1.7 million Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander people (single race or mixed race) lived in the United States, representing about 8% of the US population (ACS, 2025). In light of the unique cancer risks facing Asian Americans, the ASPIRE study has been launched to create our nation’s first Asian American cancer risk and burdens cohort; you can learn more here.

CDOC Surveillance Data Webinar Series:

 “Cost Per Cancer Cases"

Wednesday, June 18, 2025 | 12:00 – 1:00 pm

The webinar will present findings from a quantitative economic analysis of the CCR, estimating the average cost per cancer case. Using retrospective financial data (FY 2021–24) and Monte Carlo simulations, an advanced statistical method that addresses uncertainty through extensive random sampling, the analysis calculated an average cost per case of approximately $124, with minimal variability ($112–$135). Comparatively, the calculated mean cost per case of approximately $124 is at the lower end of previously reported national ranges, suggesting notable operational efficiencies, economies of scale, or budgetary constraints. It might also reflect effective use of automation, streamlined data collection processes, or improved technologies utilized by the CCR.

2021-2025 State Cancer Plan Corner

May 2025 Cancer Plan Corner Highlight

Chapter 8: Early Detection & Screening

Chapter Highlight: Melanoma

The number of lives lost from melanoma each year continues to rise. Five-year survival rates for people with melanoma depend upon the stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis, racial and ethnic differences, socioeconomic status, and access to state-of the-art treatment options for advanced disease. When melanoma is found and treated early, the chances for long-time survival are excellent. Therefore, early detection and screening are key to improving patient outcomes.

Please visit the CDOC website to read more on the cancer plan's early detection and screening strategies and objectives for California. You may also access the chapter here.
