In other data news, on December 3rd, the Federal Trade Commission published a press release entitled FTC Takes Action Against Gravy Analytics, Venntel for Unlawfully Selling Location Data Tracking Consumers to Sensitive Sites. The agency's action addresses the unlawful collection of sensitive consumer location data, including visits to healthcare providers, places of worship, and military installations. The proposed settlement prohibits the use or sale of such data, mandates its deletion, and introduces stricter compliance measures to safeguard consumer privacy and prevent future violations.

  • 'Surreptitious surveillance by data brokers undermines our civil liberties and puts servicemembers, union workers, religious minorities, and others at risk,' said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. 'This is the FTC’s fourth action taken this year challenging the sale of sensitive location data, and it’s past time for the industry to get serious about protecting Americans’ privacy.'”

CFPB proposes new rule to regulate expansive data broker industry

In an era where personal data is increasingly commodified, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is attempting to regulate the sprawling industry of data brokers. A newly proposed rule released Tuesday aims to put data brokers in line with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), ensuring accountability and consumer privacy amid widespread security issues.

There's So Much Data Even Spies Are Struggling to Find Secrets

Spying used to be all about secrets. Increasingly, it’s about what’s hiding in plain sight. A staggering amount of data, from Facebook posts and YouTube clips to location pings from mobile phones and car apps, sits in the open internet, available to anyone who looks. US intelligence agencies have struggled for years to tap into such data, which they refer to as open-source intelligence, or OSINT. But that’s starting to change.

Unpacking Real Time Bidding through FTC's case on Mobilewalla

The FTC recently announced a new enforcement action in which it alleged that the data broker Mobilewalla collected and retained sensitive location information from consumers—often without their consent—and shared those details with third parties to target advertisements. This data can reveal visits to healthcare facilities, churches, labor unions, military installations, and other sensitive locations.

GAO Flags Surveillance Tech Bias, Privacy Concerns at DHS, Secret Service

“Technologies such as automated license plate readers and drones can support federal law enforcement activities,” said GAO. “However, the use of these technologies in public spaces – where a warrant is not necessarily required prior to use – has led to concerns about how law enforcement is protecting civil rights, civil liberties, and privacy,” it said.

Bad data costs Americans trillions. Let’s fix it with a renewed data strategy

Over the past five years, the federal government lost $200-to-$500 billion per year in fraud to improper payments — that’s up to $3,000 taken from every working American’s pocket annually. Since 2003, these preventable losses have totaled an astounding $2.7 trillion. But here’s the good news: We already have the data and technology to greatly eliminate this waste in the years ahead. The operational structure and legal authority to put these tools to work protecting taxpayer dollars needs to be refreshed and prioritized.

The UK government as a data provider for AI

Generic large language model capabilities are not enough to provide accurate information to citizens. Improvements could be achieved by making government data AI-ready, but also by investing in LLMs whose functionality has been tailored and audited to ensure it provides accurate, balanced answers. Innovators all over the UK building such tailored solutions should be supported with up-to-date AI-ready government data. We believe the government should ensure equitable access to data by acting as a data provider for AI, and our report outlines a set of actionable recommendations to accomplish this role.

Securing the AI data pipeline with confidential AI

Faced with growing artificial intelligence regulation from the Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI and National Institute of Standards and Technology’s AI Safety Institute Consortium, federal agencies are encountering more pressure than ever to evolve the security and safety of their AI technologies. In particular, there is a need to create secure computing capabilities that maintain the privacy and confidentiality of AI models and data sets. Fortunately, this need is increasingly being met by innovations in confidential AI that help agencies reap the benefits of AI while avoiding the security pitfalls for some of their most demanding use cases.

China’s intelligence ministry warns of security risks from open-source information

Sensitive data that is not properly declassified or assessed for risks can be publicly spread online and “become an important source of open-source intelligence” for overseas spy agencies, the Ministry of State Security (MSS) said in an article posted on its official WeChat account on Sunday.

Landlords Are Using AI To Raise Rents — and Cities Are Starting To Push Back

Many landlords now use a single company’s software — which uses an algorithm based on proprietary lease information — to help set rent prices. Federal prosecutors say the practice amounts to “an unlawful information-sharing scheme,” and some lawmakers throughout California are moving to curb it.

How U.S. Cities Are Using AI to Solve Common Problems

Broadly speaking, cities are pursuing AI projects in three broad categories: automating tasks (mentioned by 76% of respondents), making better decisions with data (41%), and engaging the community (23%). In what follows, we explore some of the main use cases in each category and explain how these capabilities have the potential to make cities both more efficient and more responsive to their residents’ needs.
