Alumni Reunion was a Huge Hit!

On the weekend of June 2nd to 4th, our Summer Camp Alumni came together for their Reunion after a long break due to COVID. It was an incredible weekend with over 110 participants spanning generations from the 1950's to present day staff, including 14 children both present and future campers. One alumni family had a member who was a camper in the 1950's and their two sons staff members in the 90's, plus their kids!

100 Women Help Make Visits Possible

100 Women is a movement whose intent is to provide powerful impact to charities and not-for-profits by donating all of their proceeds to a single, selected charity. Members of 100 Women Peterborough recently hosted their second of four yearly meetings and Camp Kawartha was voted as the charity of choice!

Thanks to a successful pitch, 100 Women chose to donate $10,000 to our Subsidy Fund. The Fund is used to help families who access the magic of summer camp or the participate in our Outdoor Education programming. Our theme of inclusion resonated with the group, and we are absolutely delighted.

OCWA Went Golfing for an AOWT 20 Ozone System

The good people at Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) also decided to support Camp Kawartha recently by hosting a golf tournament at Dragonfly Golf Links near Renfrew.

It was a marvelous day filled with great and not so great shots, good fun, and a common goal – to help us purchase the AOWT 20 Ozone system. With the occasional appearance of blue-green algae on area lakes, Camp Kawartha wants to get ahead of the curve and install this ozone system. Ozone is very effective for “oxidizing extracellular microcystin, anatoxin-a, and cylindrospermopsin”. In simple terms, it will make our drinking water system, state of the art!

The tournament raked in $5,800.00! This is a tremendous boost to our campaign, and we thank the OCWA for choosing us, we thank their supporters, the tournament organizers, and we thank the players who came out on a hot, humid day!

Horlings Garden & Design Centre Makes a Surprise Donation

The team at Horlings Garden Centre recently provided the Camp with a lovely surprise…a trunk-load of plants to put in our new ‘canoe garden’! This is the garden the Alumni helped create during the Reunion weekend.

Where the 2022 May derecho knocked down hundreds of trees creating huge gaps in the forest, our team has filled some of the space with a new organic vegetable garden!

Alyssa and Micheal, our two gardeners who come to us thanks to Canada Summer Jobs grants, have eagerly planted the many seedlings donated by Horlings. The rain and sun should do the rest and our Kitchen will be well provided with fresh produce in August, September, and October!

We thank Nick Lie Paehlke, Nursery Lead, and the Horlings Garden Centre team for their generosity and kindness! What a lovely gift!

Environment Centre Summer Camp Spaces Available!

We're gearing up to kick off another summer of incredible day camps at the Environment Centre! While our sessions have filled up quickly this year we have been able to open up a few additional spaces in our regular EC Day Camp Weeks (ages 7 - 12).

For more information and to reserve one of these spaces please contact craig@campkawartha.ca with the name of your camper(s), their age, and which week you are interested in. Spaces will fill on a first-come first-serve basis.

Camp Kawartha... in a Nutshell

This is the 4th installment of our ‘In a Nutshell’ series which tells you about the many activities and programs that we have available.

In case you weren’t aware, Camp Kawartha offers team building opportunities for visiting groups including businesses, not-for-profits, corporations and community groups.

Using our climbing wall, high rope adventure courses and low ropes we teach teams about leadership, team building skills, trust, commitment, positive communication and the value of striving.

Spinach Salad... Who knew?

I’ve often wondered who thought to put spinach and strawberries together in a salad. It’s delicious, but really, who would have invented that?

It turns out, Mother Nature herself did!
