NEW Biotech Networks Connect

BioBrand Labs Online Forum

We're super excited to finally have a place online where we can connect and discuss life science marketing. We recently launched Biotech Networks Connect BETA, an online life science community similar to Slack. As the name suggests, folks are beta testing it now and we will be launching a mentoring program in February.

In BN Connect we've also created a space (similar to a Slack Channel) for BioBrand Labs which you can join, get updates, post, and connect with other marketers. BN Connect will be free for 60 days and after that it will be $24.99 a month for those who want to join BioBrand Labs space.

We'll eventually transfer Biotech Networks University to this platform and the space will be a place you can ask your marketing questions and get feedback from the community. Stay tuned for more courses and we envision peer-to-peer coaching being available in the near future.

To join, register for BN Connect and sign up for updates on the BioBrand Labs space on the left menu.

THE PETRI DISH

Experimental tips and data from our campaigns & experiences

The Biggest Issue in E-mail Marketing Today Is...

We have been noticing a trend which could greatly affect your e-mail marketing campaigns. Company IT departments are increasingly using software which "clicks" on every link in an email blast to determine whether the links are safe. The image on the right shows the issue, these are statistics from a recent Biotech Networks newsletter/e-mail blast. In red are the number of bot clicks removed, 19K, which is about 14 times the number of actual clicks shown in the blue circle, 1.2K. We have chosen to use Constant Contact's "bot click filtering" option in the settings and suggest you do the same. Otherwise your statistics may be very flawed.

This increased IT software usage causes many problems, including:

  • Inaccurate statistics. Even with the bot click filtering enabled, we find that our statistics can seem inaccurate. Sometimes we see that too many or too few erroneous clicks are detected.
  • Lead nurturing or segmentation disruption. These spurious clicks prevent you from being able to know with certainty whether a lead should be nurtured or segmented.
  • Website crashing. The bot click filtering measures the number of erroneous clicks, but does not block them. If you have a large number of contacts as we do, your website can go down due to an activity overload. We send our newsletters in stages to prevent our websites from going down.

How can you prevent this issue and mitigate the effects?

  • Detect bot clicks. Use Constant Contact's bot click filter or look for similar on your e-mail service provider.
  • Don't buy 3rd party e-mail lists. Providers of these lists often use algorithms to "guess" email addresses, and they target larger companies. These companies are likely larger spam/phishing targets and will be more likely to employ the bot clicking software.
  • Remove e-mail addresses that are flagged. Applications like Constant Contact will provide a list of the erroneous link clicks and the emails associated. We have been able to flag organizations who use this software and unfortunately we often just need to remove all e-mails from that organization.

Finally, you should make your department and leadership aware of this issue and that your e-mail statistics may be affected. Check out our E-mail Marketing 101 Course to learn more about optimizing your ROI on this vital digital marketing tool.

FIELD NOTES

Insightful life science marketing

Does the "Marketing Rule of 7" Apply in the Digital Age?

Life science marketers sometimes approach us at Biotech Networks for a "one off" marketing campaign such as a Dedicated/3rd Party E-blast or web banner. We try to warn them that potential leads need to see their message a minimum of 7 times to make a decision, especially if their brand is unknown to them. We covered this need for demand generation in a recent article.

We did research on the "Marketing Rule of 7" and found that it may have originated in the 1930s when movie companies realized that their customers needed to see advertisements multiple times before making the decision to buy a ticket. In the 1930s, advertising was much more limited compared to now, which could be seen as an opportunity to now reach customers in more ways.

If you're fascinated by this topic check out insightful articles here and here and here and note that many B2B marketers are indicating that many more touchpoints are now needed to close sales. This need for touchpoints is even more pronounced as many customers (especially life scientists) do extensive online and peer research before making a purchase. Even Genie, our Biotech Networks University helper in this section's image, thinks we should update this rule!

Biotech Networks created the Local Lab Leader advertising packages as a response to our customers' need for what we now call omnichannel exposure. We are offering regionally targeted packages including e-mail marketing, social media and website advertising to make sure that your brand is well known in that hub. With 180K Biotech Networks subscribers and followers we are able to implement campaigns quickly. The packages are discounted to ensure that your money is well spent as well. Fill out the form on the Local Lab Leader page to get started.
