God’s peace be with you!
Fall brings the return of school, routines, organized activities, sports, and all the busyness that comes with a new season. For some, that is exciting; for others, it feels daunting. Wherever you land, Fall can be a good time to pause and look to God.
Before simply returning to the activities and routines we’ve always done, what if we asked God to guide us? Is there something we are being called to continue or let go of? Is God inviting us to try something new—to step outside our comfort zone?
I’ve been reading An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor, a beautiful exploration of how we encounter God in everyday life. One of the spiritual practices she suggests is getting lost. When we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory—physically, emotionally, or spiritually—she writes that “God shows us what is real, including who you really are, who other people are, and how near God can be when you have lost your way.” (Brown, p. 83)
I love the idea that getting a little lost can be a spiritual practice. Trying something new—or even choosing not to do something familiar—can open us to new experiences and new ways of encountering God. These moments can become an “altar in the world,” an ordinary place where we discover that God is already present.
So, as you settle into this new season, pause before filling your calendar. Ask God first. Where is God calling you? What might God be inviting you to try, release, or see differently?
You never know what you might discover when you are willing to get a little lost.
In Christ,
Sister Sarah
