NPR Special Coverage: Presidential press conference and RNC

2024 Election Get closer to Milwaukee The 2024 RNC Special Coverage from the NPR Network

President Biden will address the media in a news conference at the 75th Anniversary NATO Summit this afternoon, amid concerns of some Democrats regarding his age and mental fitness for the 2024 presidential race. NPR's Juana Summers and Scott Detrow will host special coverage at a time to be determined, during All Things Considered today. Stay tuned.

Next week, the Republican National Convention takes place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a so-called swing state. Traditionally, a national convention solidifies the party's nominees for president and vice-president. NPR will provide daily wrap-ups of the RNC each night, Monday through Thursday, hosted by NPR political correspondent Susan Davis with analysis from the politics team. Similar coverage is planned for the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Aug. 19 – 22.

Broadcast times and more

Speaking of coverage of the presidential candidates, NPR's Public Editor, Kelly McBride, has been getting an earful. In today's column she addresses listeners' questions and comments specifically about coverage following the presidential debate:

KGOU Fundraising update:

At fiscal year-end

KGOU's budget year runs from July to June, and FY 2024 has just ended—on a steady note. We're still tallying the numbers, but it looks like FY24 will show at least a three percent increase in individual donor support over the previous year. Thank you for giving generously! Our goal for FY 2025 will continue to focus on increasing the number of listeners who donate to keep KGOU running.

On the business support side, local business underwriting for programs held steady year over year. We'll share more numbers as they're finalized, and once we complete our annual financial audit later this year.

At a time of strong headwinds, when other public radio stations and networks are having to cut back and even lay off employees, just holding the line feels like a win. Our supporters in the communities we serve—individual donors and businesses—get the credit. Thank you all!

BBC's The Forum: Music On the Move

Young woman with long dark hair and granny eyeglasses holds a 1970s radio boom box

Many of us remember the first portable music device we owned: a transistor radio, a boombox, a Walkman or perhaps an iPod. We might even recall the songs we played on it. But we might be less aware of how profoundly audio technology developments from the 1950s on have changed the ways in which we consume music. This week's KGOU Sunday Radio Matinee comes from the BBC's The Forum series, titled 'Music On the Move.' Tune in Sunday, July 14 at 12 p.m.

NPR Tiny Desk Contest 'Top Shelf' entries

NPR Music received nearly 7,000 entries to this year's Tiny Desk Contest — the annual search for the next great undiscovered artist — the winner was announced last May. Now that the pace has slowed, it's a great moment to highlight the breadth of creative, talented unsigned artists who submitted their work. Contest judges—NPR Music producers Bobby Carter and Robin Hilton, local station DJs, industry experts and Tiny Desk alums—played and discussed their favorite 'top shelf' entries in a series of YouTube videos.
