Greetings Connect K8 Families,
We first want to thank you for your support, patience, and sharing in collective grief as we all continue to process the news of Dr. Melvin Johnson's passing. As we continue to navigate the aftermath of this tragedy, I want to share three additional resources with you:
- the first has been recommended several times over the past week from trusted therapists, social workers, and counselors, called What's Your Grief--a website and community that shares authentic and helpful grief resources for anyone in need of support.
- the second is a video of Melvin himself, which he posted just last week, describing how he processes death and grief in a way that might feel supportive for you and your student(s) to hear. Some of you may know that Melvin was also a published author, and he posted weekly Chapter re-caps of his novel, The McKinnens, on Youtube. This video is particularly timely and meaningful.
- Finally, Da VInci Schools has partnered with Care Solace, a Therapist Matching Service for students, families, and staff members--If you or a family member are looking for help with mental health, Care Solace can help you quickly find treatment options matched to your needs regardless of the circumstance. Care Solace is a complimentary and confidential service provided to students, staff, and their families by Da Vinci Schools. Care Solace’s team is available 24/7/365 and can support you in any language. If you would like to use Care Solace to help you find a provider:
- Call 888-515-0595 available 24/7/365
-
Visit www.caresolace.com/davincischools and either search on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.
Our community is better because Melvin was here, and we appreciate all the ways our staff, families, and students are coming together to honor him and support his family. For more info on how to help Melvin's family, you can visit our private FB group (link in footer of newsletter). For families whose SLCs were cancelled last week, your teachers will be reaching out to you to schedule a make-up. Thank you for your understanding and your patience as we navigate the unimaginable.
With Gratitude,
Kailin and Tami

Drop Off Procedures
If you plan to exit your vehicle at all during drop off, even for a quick hug goodbye, please plan to park your car in the parking lot and walk your child to campus. The drop off line is for students exiting cars only. We have seen some unsafe choices being made to avoid or pass cars that are stopped/parked in the drop off line. Please remain in your car if you choose the drop off line and allow your child to exit independently. Please also be mindful as a driver and pedestrian in our parking lot. We share space with WUSD's preschool program, so there are many little bodies entering and exiting the lot in the am. Thank you for following these procedures to support the safety and efficiency of our morning routine!

Jessie He is the proud parent of two kids: Grant (12 years old, in Core 5) and Reagan (10 years old). I work as a pediatric registered nurse at Miller Children’s Hospital. When I am not busy with work or the kids I love to practice yoga. My email address is jessicajhe333@gmail.com

Jahmal Durham is a proud husband-son-brother-friend as well as a father to 3 wonderful Da Vinci Schools students. He has been a member of our parent-educator community at Connect for over 3 years. He became a native Angelino at the early age of 3, after moving to California from the Midwest. For him, growing up in West L.A. produced a fascination for multicultural explorations and experiences. This openness to be authentic and available to collaborate has allowed him many opportunities to grow in the application of ‘PBL’ processes and modalities. He has had measurable success following the prescriptions provided by the Connect Staff and Leadership. In 2019, Jahmal accepted the role of Activities Coordinator at Connect K8. In this role, he hopes to assist all Da Vinci families by helping to create quality community building activities and events. He is very honored to be a part of the team and to share his experience with our growing community!
