December, 2020
Greetings!

After a multi-year effort spearheaded by SUBA board member John Reed and funded by the Greater Zion Tourism office and a State of Utah Outdoor Recreation Grant, well-marked road cycling routes throughout Washington County are now ready for you to ride! These routes, for a range of cycling abilities, feature turn-by-turn directional signage along the length of each route. There will be a formal unveiling of this massive project in early 2021 but we wanted to give you a sneak peek at this great source of road cycling routes. All the routes are accessible from the Greater Zion website - Check it out!

New Bloomington Hills Trail Opens
As a result of a major advocacy effort lead by SUBA President Kye Nordfelt, working with school, PTA and city leaders, a significant safety improvement was recently completed along Bloomington Hills Drive.

To celebrate the opening of this new paved trail (which parallels Bloomington Hills Drive), a bike-to-school day was held earlier this Fall that drew many young riders and walkers.

Many SUBA Directors were there to help celebrate the opening of this new, safer way for the kids to get to school and back home.

Take a minute to watch this dramatic video showcasing the changes:
Trail Courtesy Signs
To help encourage courtesy and safety on our paved trails, SUBA is placing temporary reminder signs along the trails, usually for two weeks at a time, highlighting issues such as speed limits, pets on a leash, announcing yourself when passing, not stopping or parking on an active trail and not standing in the shadow of a dark tunnel or overpass.

Look for these signs on your next ride!
Trail Maintenance Alert!
Over the next several months work will be on-going on the River Road Bridge (as it crosses over the Virgin River near 1450 S) and upstream of River Road Bridge that will have some impacts on city paved trails.

Crews are currently removing a large sandbar and haul trucks are crossing the Virgin River North Trail, east of the River Road bridge over the Virgin River. The trail will not be closed, and there is a Stop in all directions. The Stop sign on the trail also has advance warning. The trail will be cleaned nightly at the crossing, and once the work is complete, the trail will be repaved. This work will be ongoing until next April.

Beginning January 6, 2021, work will begin on widening of River Road Bridge. Because work will be occurring above the trail, there will be times when the trail will be closed for safety. The construction contract allows the trail to be closed during night time hours only, well after dusk, and re-opened prior to early morning. The city is requiring the contractor to post the closure dates and times along the trail several days ahead of the closure dates.

SUBA Leadership
You would be correct in saying that 2020 was a year of huge progress for local cyclists and active transportation thanks to SUBA. This is only possible due to the hard work and leadership of our 13-member Board of Directors and SUBA’s Advisory Committee. Our Board members…all cyclists…include civic and government leaders, business owners, healthcare executives, engineers, financial experts, lifelong cycling advocates and even a former Olympian.
