The Power of Summer Camp
I still remember a quiet Scout I met one summer who arrived at camp with his shoulders hunched and eyes fixed on the ground. On the final day of the week, that same Scout was standing tall, teaching younger campers how to tie a square knot and cheering on his patrol at the closing campfire. Nothing about him had changed on paper—but everything had changed on the inside.
That is the magic of a strong summer camping program.
Whether it’s a first-time Tiger at day camp, a Cub Scout spending a few nights away from home at resident camp, or a troop heading to Scouts BSA summer camp, the experiences are life‑shaping. Summer camp places Scouts in an environment where teamwork isn’t optional—it’s essential. Patrols camp together, solve challenges together, and learn quickly that success comes when everyone contributes. Those shared moments build trust and teach collaboration in a way no classroom ever could.
Camp also stretches problem‑solving skills. When rain rolls in, a stove won’t light, or a plan needs to change, Scouts learn to think on their feet. With caring adult leaders nearby and peers encouraging them, they discover that obstacles are not dead ends—they’re opportunities to learn.
Skills development is woven into every camp experience. Outdoor skills, STEM activities, aquatics, shooting sports, handicrafts, leadership—the list goes on. But beyond the badges earned is something far more important: confidence. Each time a Scout masters a skill or overcomes a fear, they gain belief in themselves. That confidence carries back to school, home, and their community.
Perhaps the most lasting gift of summer camp is friendship. Away from screens and daily routines, Scouts connect deeply—with laughter around a campfire, quiet conversations in a tent, and shared pride at the end of a long day. These friendships often become the reason Scouts stay involved year after year.
As volunteers, your commitment makes these moments possible. By supporting and promoting summer camp, you are opening doors to growth, resilience, and discovery. A week—or even a day—at camp can truly change a life.
Let’s make sure every Scout has the chance to experience it this summer.
