PUTTING YOU ON YOUR AGENDA
Within the last few weeks I have had to face putting myself at the top of my agenda. I did not return phone calls or E-mails I just centered myself.
Here's what happened, but a little history first:
When I was in my 40's my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She was a stage 4. Her mom, My grandmother also had Breast Cancer and so I was facing my mom's mortality and possibly my own. I had great doctors in Colorado who guided me through what I needed to do now that my mom had been diagnosed. I took the BRCA genetic test and made a promise to myself:
If I got breast cancer I would find it early!
My Mom survived for 8 years after and was Cancer free.
But I have kept that promise to myself for almost 40 years!
So when I had my yearly Mammography and Ultrasound (I have dense breasts so both are recommended) and they found Calcification in my right breast I had to do another round of Mammography and Ultrasound. During this nerve racking experience I kept reminding myself that this was what I promised myself; to catch it early.
They recommended a Biopsy. Never had one before. They also said we could wait a few months to see what happened. Given my promise to myself I went for the biopsy. I had a great experience. My radiologist was expert and so were the 2 nurses who were assisting her and me.
She got all of the calcified cells (by the way as you get older calcification of the breast is normal) But with my family history we didn't wait.
It took 4 days for the results to come in. 4 days that I kept reminding myself that if it is the worse case I did get it early and could be treated.
During this time I held everyone at bay except my family and they were incredibly supportive. I had to center myself and stay focused.
The outcome is I am totally Negative. All the cells are benign.
That isn't the point of this article. The point is are you centering your self and making you a priority without a health scare. Do you even know how to do that??
Do you schedule all your yearly exams including Mammography (if you are old enough) or do you put it off and put work and others first??
Please use this article to reprioritize your list and put you first. Make sure you are using all the diagnostic tools at your disposal. Don't skip a year!
And by the way, if you do get a diagnosis that you have breast cancer we have a group of WMF® grads who have survived that diagnosis who are willing to support you.
Let me know what you think....
