This seems to be one of the places many of you are placing your focus. I know people who have already permanently lost jobs, have been furloughed, laid off or were already looking. The reality is we should always be ready to look---or be seen.

Personally, I do not feel I was prepared to do anything but send in a resume’ that looked like everyone else’s. I feel a lot of advice I got for job searches was useless at best, damaging at worst. Even when I work with people much younger than me, I find a lot of the same advice being given, along with more current advice that is not very useful either.

Most of you know I have another part of my business called The Guidance Counselor for Grown Ups, and part of what I do there is help people with Career Strategy. I wanted to share some things I have been working on there, that hopefully will help you in your career in general, and specifically right now. These concepts are also good for performance reviews, and promotions, not only getting a job. And they are good for anyone, anywhere, in any type of job.

Event Cancellation Insurance

I was speaking with Jen Wilkes, a planner with Total Management Solutions, located in New Jersey. She happened to mention this story to me, and I asked her permission to include it. Remember this is not legal or insurance advice from either her or I. I think it is nice to hear directly from a planner.
"We bought our event cancellation insurance last September with a communicable disease clause as an addition . (From Joanne: Which she told me she somewhat laughed at. Why would you ever need it?) The event budget is roughly $190,000 and makes approximately $40,000. Based on those numbers, the insurance cost $480, with the extra clause included.   (She shared the clause with me) Pay attention to the line about "fear or the perception of fear". That is huge, and can take all of your protection away if the government or the venue does not officially do anything about the situation . (This is similar to weather statements—people have to be prevented from coming, not just not want to.)

We are currently working with our adjuster to see how this will play out, but we were holding this event in Kansas, at a university. Because the state of Kansas cancelled school for the remainder of the year, we feel we have overcome the fear clause. Time will tell.

Moving forward, if you purchase this type of insurance, you can get this addendum, but it will not include COVID-19 as one of the diseases. That ship has sailed! It would have to have been put in place before 12/2019 in order for it to be accepted. I too have a few large events coming up for a different client. They have asked me to get this insurance so that it protects them should they need to cancel in September due to COVID-19. The insurance company said, and I quote..."That is like calling us when your house is on fire, to get coverage for your home."

Here is an article one of the industry magazines published concerning this:
