Historical Tidbit:

Pope's Tavern

7564a276-0f6d-49ed-bc9f-786a8afcc7c6 image

Historically, taverns played a very important role. They were meeting houses where everyone heard the news and discussed politics.

Dunbar's tavern was a large two story gambrel roof building built by the elder Daniel Dunbar for his son, Daniel, possibly as early as 1700.

Many stirring scenes took place there as the Dunbar's were Tories and the younger Daniel was driven out of town. This building was bought and torn down by J. Levering Jones before 1934. This once grand building stood on the east side of Hemlock Lane at the corner of Plymouth Street.

Across the street from the Congregational Church, on the corner of Plymouth and South Street, stands what is known as Pope's Tavern. Pope's was built before October 1830 by Stafford Sturtevant for his son-in-law Captain Henry Pope and his daughter Lydia.

At a convention held there on October 13, 1830, John Quincy Adams was elected to be sent to congress in Washington, D.C. Today the building serves our Council on Aging office and provides a place for the programs they offer senior citizens.

Going west down from Pope's Tavern was the site of Bosworth's Tavern. It was located in the area of the parking lot for the Brockton Store and Vaughan Field. David Bosworth was born and died in Halifax (1669 - 1747) built it in the very early days. His grandson, John Bosworth, later ran the Tavern.

Climate Can Do:

Seasonal Food and Farmers Markets

Going to a farmers market is a wonderful activity to do with family, friends, or alone, and it also helps the planet.

Local and Seasonal Food

Farmers markets sell primarily local food. Vendors travel from their farms to the market. Because the food travels a shorter distance from the farm to the consumer, less gas is burned for transportation. Local produce is seasonal— strawberries in late spring and early summer, peaches and watermelon in the middle of summer, grapes and apples in the fall, squashes in the winter. It is fresh, nutrient rich with more taste. Additionally, smaller farmers are more likely to pay their workers a living wage than huge factory farms.

Avoid Monocrop Farming

Smaller farmers are less likely to use monocropping. Planting a single crop over and over again in the same space harms the soil, requires more pesticides, and adds harmful runoff of chemicals to local water supplies.

Accessibility

Farmers markets increase access to fresh, high quality food in lower income communities. Since farmers who sell at the markets typically travel around to different locations in the surrounding area of their farms, they can provide better, healthier food choices for communities that do not have access to them.

Reduced Plastic Waste

Farmers market products are not typically wrapped in plastic, or pre-cut and packaged, as in grocery stores. This reduces plastic waste.
