Fair Transit South Cook Pilot

January 28, 2021 - 7:00 pm - via Zoom
WHAT? What is the Fair Transit South Cook Pilot?
The Fair Transit Pilot is a project launched by Cook County, Metra and Pace to improve transit service and lower costs for the residents of the south side of Chicago, south suburban Cook and north Will Counties. Ultimately, the Fair Transit Pilot seeks to provide seamless transfers between all transit operators in subsequent phases.
WHERE? Where is the Fair Transit Pilot service area?
The Fair Transit Pilot service area is Metra's Electric and Rock Island lines as well as Pace's 352 Halsted corridor route.
WHO? Who will benefit?
Full fare Metra riders in the Fair Transit Pilot service area will pay Metra's reduced fare rates (up to 50% off full fare rates). One of the goals of the Fair Transit Pilot is to provide relief to existing riders, especially essential workers, by reducing fares and to encourage new riders to consider taking public transit when traveling to work, school, shopping and regional destinations.
WHEN? When will the Fair Transit Pilot run?
The Fair Transit Pilot launched January 4, 2021 and will run for three years.
WHY? Why is Cook County partnering with Metra and Pace?
In 2019, the County’s Department of Transportation and Highways completed the South Cook Mobility Study. This study provided a fundamental understanding of the transportation challenges residents in this area face. The study showed that connectivity and mobility to other areas of the County was very challenging, leading to high unemployment rates, crime and poor health outcomes. Using existing infrastructure, the Fair Transit Pilot saves time and money for residents living in and traveling to south Cook. By partnering with Metra and Pace, the County has taken the first steps to help create more accessibility and enhanced service for residents in the Southland.
