Northumberland Regional High School (Westville, Nova Scotia), a Nutrients for Life 2024 Learning Garden grant recipient, utilized their grant monies to add a learning garden as a living lab for their Agriculture 11 class. Their garden also helped to support the student-run free lunch program at their school. Northumberland HS also started the development of a food forest, a medicine garden, and an indoor hydroponic garden this past year. The gardens were accessed by many classes, including Biology, Mi'kmaw Studies, construction tech, culinary arts, and art.
“We did intensive gardening and grew SOO MUCH!” A teacher from Northumberland said about the huge yield. “Starting a school garden is a rewarding project that brings people together and supports learning.”
Their harvest included basil, beans, beets, butternut squash, chives, corn, cucamelon, cucumbers, dill, garlic, kale, lettuce, onions, parsley, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, radicchio, radish, sweet potatoes, Swiss chard, tomatoes, turnip, and watermelon. They harvested almost 300 lbs of food this year.
Nutrients for Life Foundation believes education is at the root of understanding the living world around us. Learning Gardens are outdoor, educational environments where students discover soil science and agricultural sustainability through hands-on practice.
