What is Leadership Intelligence?
|
Leadership intelligence is often misunderstood as simply intellectual power. But there’s more to the story. While critical thinking is certainly at its core, leadership intelligence is more complex and multidimensional.
The truth is, leadership intelligence combines intellectual capability with multiple other intelligences enabling good sense and judgment, supporting leadership effectiveness in areas including personal leadership, people, execution to strategy, agility, and more.
Leadership is complex, nuanced, and multidimensional—just like the intelligence that fuels it. So, it's more than intellectual "smarts." It's about using cognitive abilities alongside other key capabilities that mobilize smart thinking, by translating reasoned decisions into effective actions.

A Closer Look at Leadership Intelligence
|
|
Beyond critical thinking, we can think of leadership intelligence as a measure of an individual’s ability to use their cognitive smarts in combination with accessing their skills—natural and learned—to organize and manage their thinking, actions, and emotions to make sound judgments, navigate complexity, and make meaningful decisions.

A Mindset Shift
Looking Back to Move Forward
With about six weeks left in this final quarter of 2024, it’s the perfect time for leaders to revisit annual objectives, gauge progress, and recalibrate for the last sprint to year-end. Yet, when most people reflect on their year-end goals, they often focus on the gap between where they are and where they want to be. This "gap thinking" tends to emphasize what’s left undone, leaving many feeling unsatisfied with their progress.
But what if there’s a better approach? Rather than looking ahead at the distance left to cover, look back at how far you’ve come. Highlighting progress and acknowledging achievements from the start of the year can energize and inspire momentum in these final weeks. Appreciating the gains made, even if they’re incremental, can shift your mindset and provide a powerful boost as you approach year-end.

Why is this Important?
Mindset is everything. Studies and psychological insights reveal that viewing your journey from a “gain” perspective—focusing on what you’ve accomplished—enhances motivation, reduces stress, and paves the way to future success.
To discover the powerful concept of "The Gap and The Gain," and practical insights for adopting this mindset,

And you know little else but strife
Flip the switch in your brain
Turn on the desire for gain
Soon results will be ones that you like.”

What’s Really Driving Decisions You Make And Actions You Take?
Every day, we make decisions—some big, some small—but every choice carries consequences. The quality of our decisions relies heavily on our judgment. Yet, many of us unknowingly carry what I call “mind knots”—biases that interfere with clear judgment.
Mind Knots are cognitive and emotional biases that create mental distortions, tangling our perception and skewing our thinking. It’s a distinctly human challenge, and no one is immune. Psychologists, scientists, and economists have identified over 200 types of biases. And while some biases may be more dominant in each of us, make no mistake: we are all influenced by a unique mosaic of biases tucked into our subconscious.
