President's Message

It is a great time to be a podiatrist!

While I cannot think of a better time in history to be a podiatrist given the battles won by ABPM in aiding podiatrists with their hospital privileging, ABPM intervention and legislation aimed to increase state scopes, ABPM’s agreement with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, as well as a federal intervention to improve podiatry’s pay tables and salaries within the Veteran’s Administration, to name a few, the stakes and risks could also not be any higher.

The risk of CPME’s power grab and the potential harm from the newly proposed CPME 220/230 draft is upon us.

The proposed rules move the power to the self-appointed and self-elected CPME, give the CPME new powers never before recognized such as banning CAQs. Also concerning is that these draft standards are in conflict with our own APMA's bylaws. The newly written standards may prohibit ABPM from assisting Diplomates in obtaining surgical privileges, preventing inequities from being righted.

The open period for comments runs until July 15, 2024. Make your voice heard! ABPM offers any podiatrists the opportunity to use an innovative letter writing tool at www.podiatryforward.org to aid in contacting CPME to express the concern with these potential changes. Access the tool here!

Nonetheless, I still do believe now is a great time to be a podiatrist. The ABPM is flourishing, now with over 6,000 Diplomates, and we continue to grow! ABPM has announced its new permanent Executive Director, Stephanie Hook, DPM, FFPM RCPS(Glasg), a new Examination Chair, Peter Crisologo, DPM, FFPM RCPS(Glasg), and a new Communications Committee Chair, Kiana Trent, DPM, FFPM RCPS(Glasg). I also want to offer a sincere thank you for years of quality and expertise to our previous Examination Chair, Gina Painter, DPM, FFPM RCPS(Glasg).

In June 2024, the ABPM and the RCPSG signed a bilateral, exclusive agreement in Glasgow, Scotland. The Royal College bestows recognition on the ABPM certification. Diplomates now qualify for Membership (less than 3 years of practice experience) or Fellowship (more than 3 years of experience) of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College.

Fellows of the College bear the post-nominal title of FFPM RCPS(Glasg). Diplomates may then take advantage of the Royal College’s storied reputation and extensive resources to raise their knowledge-base and professional prestige within the United States and globally. ABPM will also jointly sponsor the development and delivery of CME/CECH and MOC resources for Diplomates, expanding educational opportunities and MOC flexibility for podiatrists in the U.S., certified by ABPM and enrolled in the College.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG), established in 1599, is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical institutions in the world and the only multidisciplinary Royal College of medicine in the United Kingdom, incorporating faculties in medicine, surgery, dentistry, travel medicine, and podiatric medicine.

ABPM Names Stephanie Hook, DPM, Executive Director

The Board of Directors unanimously selected ABPM Diplomate and New York-state-based podiatrist, Stephanie Hook, DPM, as the organization’s next Executive Director. Dr. Hook's service with the Board began in 2014 as a case documentation reviewer. She then went on to serve the Communications Committee as a member, followed by two years as the editor of the Board's Diplomate Newsletter. Dr. Hook then joined the Board of Directors as Vice President and Communications Committee chair in 2023.

"I am thrilled and humbled by the opportunity to serve ABPM's diverse and growing ranks of Diplomates," Dr. Hook said. "I look forward to continuing to serve the board as its chief executive, and to furthering our work to move podiatry forward for our diplomates and all podiatrists who can benefit from our vision for the future."

Dr. Hook previously served for over seven years as one of only two staff podiatrists at Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists, a large orthopedic medical group in upstate New York. This was after over 8 years in a large podiatry practice in the same area. Dr. Hook has served the NYSPMA as a Trustee, as a member of the Bylaws, Awards, and Insurance and Health Policy committees, as well as chairing the Public Education and Information committee and the Public and Population Health Task Force. She currently serves the NYSPMA as President of the Central Division. She is a member of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine and the American Association for Women Podiatrists. She is also a Fellow of the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons and the American College of Podiatric Medicine, and is a Fellow Faculty in Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons- Glasgow.

She is a 2004 graduate of the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, now Kent State University College of Podiatry Medicine, and completed a podiatric medicine and surgery residency at Catholic Health System/Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, New York in 2007, serving as Chief Resident her third year.

Residency Program Evaluator Spots are Open for 2024!

One of the most important components of the CPME residency approval process is the team site visit. The site visit is a peer-review process that helps to enhance the quality of education by assessing a program’s compliance with CPME standards and requirements. CPME is committed to ensuring each evaluator possesses appropriate experience and skills essential to the evaluation process. CPME residency evaluators must be certified by one or both of the specialty boards recognized by the SBRC and should be either program directors or active faculty members of CPME-approved residencies. Prior to participating as a member of a team, evaluators complete a training program and are assigned to a team as trainees under the tutelage of the team chair and the specialty board representatives. The Residency and Fellowship Visits - Invitation for Comments Become a CPME Residency Program Evaluator council pays all expenses incurred during the site visit and a per diem for each travel and on-site visit day. Individuals interested in becoming residency evaluators should submit a letter of interest and current curriculum vitae to their certifying boards. Contact information for the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM), as well as a description of the ABPM-certified evaluator criteria, can be found at CPME.org/residencyevaluators.

If you are interested in being nominated to serve as a site visit evaluation team member, please submit your CV along with a letter of interest to stephanie.hook@podiatryboard.org.

ABPM Launches “Tomorrow’s Podiatrist” Essay Scholarship

The American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM), the nation’s premier certifying board for Doctors of Podiatric Medicine, has developed a new scholarship program for podiatry students and young practitioners, to develop future leaders of the profession through immersive clinical and professional experiences.

The scholarship shall be awarded to one student and one qualifying resident DPM, to include a paid trip to the American Society of Podiatric Surgeons (ASPS) Conference, October 18-19th, 2024 in New Orleans, LA. ABPM has developed the following criteria for entrants to meet for consideration:

• Residents must answer, in a compelling fashion, the following prompt: “Advances in surgical technique and procedure occur in medicine every day, particularly in minimally invasive surgery. With this in mind, evaluate the necessity of orthopedics and biomechanics training for today’s podiatrist, and how surgical and non-surgical treatment approaches can co-exist in contemporary medical practice”

• Students must answer, in a compelling fashion, the following prompt: “Podiatry faces multiple headwinds compared to our MD/DO colleagues, including encroachment on podiatric scope of practice and lack of parity. What is the role of podiatrists in today’s healthcare system and how should the profession poise itself to make a positive difference on these issues now and in the future.”

• Submissions Are Now Open through August 1st, 2024.

• Qualifying applicants must be either a final year podiatric medical school student or in any year of their CPME-approved PMSR/RRA-36 residency program.

• Submit via email to peter.mounteer@podiatryboard.org

Applicants must be a qualifying resident physician or qualifying student in time for the ASPS Conference in October, 2024 and shall be chosen at the August meeting of the Board of Directors and shall be notified appropriately.

ABPM recognizes the gravity of the current leadership crisis within the profession and its inability to meet the needs of current and future generations of podiatrists. ABPM developed the scholarship to groom the next generation of leaders in podiatry by exposing them to cutting edge clinical conferences and familiarizing them with the litany of ways board certification in podiatric orthopedics and primary podiatric medicine can serve them for the life of their career.

Our Partnership with The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow: What it Means for You

Diplomates of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine now enjoy an exclusive pathway to membership and fellowship with the prestigious Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG). This recently announced partnership is the culmination of years of friendly relations between the Board and the College and each organization's constituent podiatrists to advance the profession at home and abroad. This partnership mutually recognizes the need to further develop postgraduate knowledge, skills and expertise in podiatric medicine and healthcare globally, for the benefit of patient care and safety.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG), established in 1599, was founded to regulate and improve the standards of medicine, surgery and pharmacy in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Members of its faculty made significant contributions to medical science and surgical advancement and safety. From the late 1600s until the end of World War II, the college was one of several in the United Kingdom that regulated entry into the medical and surgical professions via examination to medical degree holders.

From the mid-20th century through today, the College continues its mission to improve patient care around the world, focusing on postgraduate medical education, training, and examination. Its examinations, much like ABPM's, are written by committees of volunteer physicians.

The Fellowship of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine within the RCPSG [FFPM RCPS (Glasg)] is a distinguished honor that recognizes the exceptional contributions and achievements of podiatric practitioners on a global scale.

Under ABPM's agreement with the Royal College, the RCPSG recognizes the ABPM certification as an entry qualification for Membership or Fellowship.

ABPM Diplomates with less than 3 years of post-training practice experience are eligible to enroll as Members, those Diplomates with more than 3 years of practice experience qualify for Fellowship. These Diplomates may then take advantage of the Royal College’s storied reputation and extensive resources to raise their knowledge-base and professional prestige within the United States and abroad.

ABPM will also jointly sponsor the development and delivery of CME/CECH and MOC resources for Diplomates, expanding educational opportunities and MOC flexibility for podiatrists in the U.S., certified by ABPM and enrolled in the College. The Royal College will benefit from access to ABPM’s large pool of engaged Diplomates, bringing a diversity of clinical and professional expertise to its membership, as well as the visibility and resources that a partnership with ABPM provides.

Entry Process:

1. Gather your application materials: Residency Completion Certificate, Board Certification Diploma, and your Updated Curriculum Vitae

2. Submit these materials by email, including your request for either Membership or Fellowship in the RCPSG to: RCPSGapplications@podiatryboard.org

3. Wait for an email from the RCPSG, be sure to monitor your spam/junk email folders just in case. Once received and approved, complete the application for your chosen faculty affiliation and pay your dues.

Members and Fellows of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine will be permitted to add the appropriate post-nominal to their names: MFPM RCPS(Glasg) for members, or FFPM RCPS(Glasg) for fellows.
