Iconic Children’s Book Character Continues to Create Summertime Fun to Support the Shop Local Movement
|
|
Where’s Waldo? In Trolley Square, of course! The iconic children’s book character in the red-and-white-striped shirt and black-rimmed specs is visiting businesses throughout our mall this July. Find Waldo Local is a free, family-friendly summer activity and a wonderful way to support local businesses, including Tabula Rasa, Williams Sonoma, Spark, My Amour, and so many more!
Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a “Find Waldo Local in Trolley Square!” stamp card at Weller Book Works, which contains the names of all the participating sites; with each Waldo they spot, they can get their card stamped or signed by the participating shop. Waldo has also misplaced his glasses in Weller Book Works, so eagle-eyed hunters can find those as well! Collecting store stamps or signatures at mall businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand-prize drawing for Waldo books and paraphernalia.

Martin Handford’s collections of crowd scenes took the world by storm in the late 1980s, and since then the books have held a cherished place on bookstore shelves. More than 80 million Waldo books have been sold worldwide, and they’ve been translated into over thirty languages.
Once again, in celebration of Waldo’s longevity and popularity, Candlewick Press is teaming up with the American Booksellers Association and hundreds of independent bookstores nationwide for some hide-and-seek fun designed to encourage residents to patronize their local businesses. There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts goes to July 29.

Weller Book Works Collectors' Book Salons feature libations and treats, social time for conversation and a special deal on rare books that is only available to guests. Books are bridges across the divides of time and space and they embrace the diversity of the human experience, we try to keep our treats, speakers and deals diverse, which is maybe another word for unpredictable. We encourage guests to dress up, or down, or weird, or playfully, to help our sensibilities out of predictable zones.
Glasses filled at 6:30 and we muster for the Collectors’ Chat at 7:15 in our Rare Book Room. The event has no digital component.

A Russian Literary Journey
|
|
The Collector’s Chat during our July 28th Salon will be given by Nathan Nielson, founder of Books & Bridges, a literary program hosted here at Weller Book Works until displaced by CoViD a few years ago. His chat is called “A Russian Literary Journey.” Neilson received a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in Russian & International Relations and a master’s in Liberal Arts from the Great Books Program of St. John’s College. He worked as a Russian linguist in the intelligence community and works as a public relations and communications professional. Nielson’s literary journey began in Moscow and continues still. He argues that the best way to understand the soul of a people is to dive into their highest literary tradition.
Of his chat, Nathan writes: “Historically, Russians have been a highly literate, well-read population. Their writers are their true prophets and presidents. The vaunted and mysterious Russian soul, though embedded in national soil, has a universal embrace. The great Russian novelists and poets turned the sorrow of tyranny and suffering into beautiful works of human connection, a magical process of alchemy and empathy. To paint a small picture of a people’s big heart, I will discuss and share books I brought from Russia—Crime and Punishment, Anna Karenina, Aleksandr Pushkin, and other Russian classics.”
