Environmental sustainability is an important topic here in Ossining. Thank you to Green Ossining, all the many volunteers, small businesses, elected officials, non-profits, educational organizations, Village and Town staff, and of course, all of the folks that came out this past weekend to support the County's largest Earth Day festival. A special shout out to Suzie Ross, who has worked and built this event from the ground up with her heart and soul! Thank you to all involved, and keep up the good work.

Celebrate Arbor Day with Ossining for a tree planting at the bus station on Spring Street between Waller Avenue & St. Paul's Place this Friday. Planting trees helps to remove air pollutants and cool hot streets by providing shade and releasing water vapor. All in the community are welcome.
We will also be planting a tree as a living tribute to Reginald Lafayette, a longtime friend of Ossining and a Westchester leader. Ken Jenkins, Westchester’s Deputy County Executive, called Lafayette’s death "a tremendous loss" to everyone in the state of New York. "Reggie's public service was exemplary, as well as his dedication to ensuring that people of color and women were elected at every level of government."

The Village of Ossining is committed to ensuring that all community members and visitors to Ossining, including people with disabilities, can access Village information. In an effort to increase accessibility and support all who may wish to use our website, we have implemented the AudioEye technology platform on the Village of Ossining’s official website. AudioEye helps websites meet digital compliance guidelines set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and other regulations.
AudioEye is an assistive technology that provides a website tool, placed directly on the site, allowing users to customize and enhance their experience. The Ally Toolbar offers the user a visual toolkit to assist users with dyslexic fonts, adjustments to color contrast, font size, navigation, and keyboard controls, amongst other helpful options.
This tool is included on all of our website's pages. The AudioEye toolbar can be activated by selecting the "blue person icon" located at the bottom right-hand side of your screen. The toolbar allows users to customize the site based on their individual preferences, which enhances the usability for all site visitors.

Do you know any Ossining young adults ages 14-20 looking for employment this summer? Good news! The Ossining Youth Bureau has limited opportunities for 20 hrs/week. Youth will gain knowledge in culinary arts, health, landscaping, civil service, and many other types of work. In addition to gaining valuable work experience, participants will take part in an employability workshop.

As the weather warms up, we are mindful that more members of the community will be outdoors walking, jogging, and biking. It is also the beginning of bike season here in New York. Whether riding a traditional bike or an e-bike, following safety rules is important. For the next few weeks, I will feature specific information for safety. I encourage everyone to make good choices on bike maintenance to help reduce injuries and make your bike ride fun! For those riding e-bikes – here are some helpful battery safety tips:

More on mobility: The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) adopted a policy that allows the transport of personal electric vehicles (PEV) on MTA property and on-board transit, with the exception of MTA express buses, and outlined the rules for safe transport. This policy supports New York State’s and New York City’s micromobility programs encouraging the use of personal vehicles such as bikes and scooters, particularly for first and last-mile transportation, enhancing the transit experience by supporting multi-modal journeys and providing seamless integration. The policy will increase access to MTA transit for people who do not live within walking distance of a transit station.

Upcoming: May is Jewish American Heritage Month, and I welcome the opportunity to celebrate the important contributions Jewish Americans have made to America since the first group of Jews arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654.
The U.S. has many heritage months to celebrate the communities that form our national mosaic. By celebrating heritage months, we learn about one another, honor the complexity and richness of our nation, and strengthen the fabric of American society. May was first proclaimed Jewish American Heritage Month in April 2006 by President George W. Bush to honor the American Jewish community, which was founded in 1654 by a group of 23 Jews - men, women, and children - fleeing persecution in Brazil. Over the past 369 years, Jewish Americans have contributed in countless ways to their communities and this nation as loyal and patriotic citizens.
