COLUMBUS (October 3, 2024) — The Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA), and the Strategic Research Group (SRG), will release the 2024 State of Poverty in Ohio Report on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at The Ohio Statehouse Ladies Gallery. The press conference will begin at 1:30 p.m.

As Ohio’s economy changes, so do the barriers to overcoming poverty. For thirty years, the State of Poverty in Ohio Report has researched current challenges in our state seeking new opportunities to advance the Community Action mission and help Ohioans reach self-reliance. The 2024 report uncovers issues influencing poverty, including unaffordable housing, food insecurity, healthcare access, and specifically reviews how those issues affect Ohio’s children.

“Children are affected more significantly by poverty than adults with a rate nearly 5% higher," said Philip E. Cole, executive director of OACAA. “This year, we dive deeper into the effects poverty has on children, including how it impacts their physical, social, and educational development.”

The report aggregates data sources, such as from the U.S. Census Bureau and independent research reports, to uncover barriers Ohioans face each day. This year’s report brings back the Ohio Well-Being Dashboard following a gap in data availability during the pandemic. The data, combined with graphics, narrative, and scenarios of people in poverty, shine a light on the impacts to Ohio’s children.

During the press conference, Cole and Tina Kassebaum, Partner and Principal Investigator of SRG, will highlight the report’s findings, discuss the methodology, and answer questions. Copies of the report will be available at the press conference, as well as online at www.oacaa.org immediately following.
