Beautiful, colorful flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing and the pollen is totally out of control!  ðŸ˜Š

April is National Volunteer Month – It’s a time to celebrate you—our incredible mentors—who give your time, energy, and heart to help shape the futures of young people in our community.

I’ve loved my journey as a Big Sister to Kai. She’s 13, full of curiosity, and always up for trying new foods—especially if ramen noodles are involved! We’ve had meaningful conversations and fun adventures, and I’m constantly inspired by her insight and strength. Recently, Kai told me she took a break from her phone for her mental health. I was so proud—what a mature choice for a young girl navigating middle school and social media. She dreams of becoming a therapist one day to help other kids work through trauma. And I’m honored to be someone she can count on along the way.

As we launch our spring campaign, we invite you to join us in another meaningful way. If you're receiving a bonus or tax refund this season, consider sharing a small portion to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas. If everyone gives just a little, it can lead to something truly big for the Littles we serve. Your generosity helps us keep this life-changing work going. Together, we’re planting seeds that grow bright, confident futures.

Yours in Service to Youth,

Big Sister Donna

MEET BIG SISTER ANDY & LITTLE SISTER JAKHIYA

What has been the most memorable moment in your match?

One of the most special moments was being at Jakhiya’s eighth-grade graduation. I surprised her by showing up—but in true Jakhiya fashion, she wasn’t really surprised. She told me she knew I’d be there. That moment meant so much because it showed how much trust and consistency we’ve built over the years. She knew I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

What is your experience being matched?

I absolutely love being matched with Jakhiya. When we first met, she was just nine years old and very shy. Now, at almost 16, she’s grown into such a beautiful, smart young woman with a great head on her shoulders. Watching her grow up has truly been a privilege. Being a Big Sister is such a rewarding experience, and I’d love to encourage others to get involved—but it does take commitment, responsibility, and showing up consistently. It’s not just about being a mentor; it’s about building a relationship that lasts.

How does it feel to be a Big?

Being a Big is one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Since I don’t have kids of my own, getting to watch Jakhiya grow up has been so special. My friends always ask about her because they’ve seen our pictures over the years and are blown away by how much she’s grown. But what means the most is how she’s opened up to me. We have real conversations about life, what’s going on, and everything in between. It’s more than just mentorship—it’s a bond I truly cherish.

Game Night Fun with the Hornets!

On Wednesday, March 5th, our matches got the VIP treatment at a Charlotte Hornets game—courtesy of our amazing friends at the Hornets! Not only did they enjoy an exciting night of basketball, but each match also scored a cool t-shirt and a special gift from Sky Miles! Talk about a slam dunk experience! 🙌

Big thanks to the Hornets and Sky Miles for making memories that our matches won’t forget!
