Giving Tuesday, 2022!

Message from Board Member, Tim Feddersen

Please consider giving TODAY to Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley for Giving Tuesday!

We have so much to be grateful for this season, and we feel incredibly lucky to serve the many amazing and inspiring youth here at the Club. This month, members came together for a special art project to list what they were thankful for, and we loved seeing what they wrote while letting their creativity shine.

Thank you to our community for your continued support of the work we do, and for being a part of their journey with us! ๐Ÿงก

November Club Highlights

Check out this month's happenings:

Dia De Los Muertos

Members at Canoga Park High School participated in a Dia De Los Muertos Activity which consisted of educational questions (i.e what the candles represent, what are the skulls normally made out of, etc) with answers provided on the altar. Students also enjoyed hot chocolate and conchas (sweet bread).

Education

Tim Gaspar generously donated his time at Cleveland High School to share about his career as the CEO of Gaspar Insurance, and various other experiences, with our members as part of our Passionate Work program.

STEM

Our Club members have really shown an interest in our STEM program. This month members learned the importance of electricity and what is required for us to have it in our homes, streets, and city. In the picture you see members learning how to manipulate electricity using a power source, different types of conductors and gator clips to transfer the current of electricity to power the LED.

Sports & Recreation

To promote peer connections, we have given our Club member, Aryian, a platform to highlight his athletic skills by teaching our younger members how to play basketball. Aryian plays basketball competitively outside of school, so we are happy to have him teach our members the same drills and skills at the Club!

The Arts

In celebration of Thanksgiving, Blythe members participated in a โ€œTurkey Dayโ€ parade where they got to decorate balloons and show off their creations in a float! Here, we have POD 2 displaying their beautiful banner and some of their special creations they presented during the walking float. POD 2 won our competition and will celebrate with a pizza party after the break!

Community Light Event

On Saturday, December 3rd, 2022, beginning at the Taxco Theatre, the community of Canoga Park and surrounding neighborhoods will gather to walk together as a united community. To celebrate and honor the light in each person, family, community organization, and business that has created a safe and nurturing neighborhood for all to thrive.

Under the guidance of theatre director Jon Lawrence Rivera, the community walk will have moments of dance, music, and poetry representing local artists and the varied cultures of the neighborhood. Community partners include StrengthUnited, Alliance for Community Empowerment, Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley, Children Development Institute, Canoga Park Women's Club, and others.

The Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley will be the last stop! The community will join us for warm drinks and sweet breads. When the community arrives we'll light up our Clubhouse with beautiful string lights placed everywhere. Our Clubhouse will be open to tour with the different programs we offer, and each room will have staff highlighting those programs.
