Uniquely Wisconsin to produce Calumet County based programming
Calumet County recently contracted with Uniquely Wisconsin to produce programming celebrating what is special and unique in Calumet County. Uniquely Wisconsin, the same people that bring you the award-winning Discover Wisconsin series, is highlighting stories of the people, the culture, and the history of our state, sprinkled in with a bit of economic development and tourism. In late March, Uniquely Wisconsin won an Emmy for one of its programs.
Uniquely Wisconsin storytelling utilizes video, broadcast television, audio, podcasts, and social media to tell the stories of local communities. The stories highlight families, community groups/activities, community kindness, those in the service and hospitality industry, artists, and creators with vision for the future.
Uniquely Wisconsin will be producing Calumet County based stories this summer, leading to the debut of programming in September of this year. After interviewing about a dozen unique and interesting organizations, three were selected that will be featured through Uniquely Wisconsin programming. They are Brillion's Ariens Nordic Center, Chilton's Terra Verde, and New Holstein's Woelfel Homestead. Others that were considered and interviewed by Uniquely Wisconsin staff include: Chilton's Gravity Park USA, Chilton's Hilde's Deli & Bakery, Chilton's Lakeside - Vision Center Faith Technologies, Chilton's Ledge View Nature Center, Hilbert's Mulberry Lane Farm, Chilton's Polly's Pumpkin Patch, Stockbridge's Schumacher's Shanty Pizza and Sandwich Pub, and New Holstein's Timm House.
Look to the Focus on Calumet and Travel Calumet newsletters for updates and news leading up to the September debut of the Calumet County inspired Uniquely Wisconsin programming.

Appleton ranked 8th as America’s best cities for Gen Z workers
By Sara Korolevich, checkr
Above you’ll see Fargo, ND as the top-ranked city in America for Gen Z workers. Fargo boasts an impressive combination of affordability (4th) and employment factors (13th) for Gen Zers, making it a great choice for young professionals in the workforce. On top of those metrics, Fargo is also well-known for its thriving art scene, entrepreneurial spirit, and a plethora of green spaces, parks, and recreational areas for outdoor enthusiasts.
Rounding out the top five best cities for Gen Z workers is a group of midwestern cities, including Oshkosh, WI, Cedar Rapids, IA, Bismarck, ND, and Madison, WI. This group of small, mid-sized, and large cities may not showcase the most desirable climate in winter, depending on your preferences, but when it comes to employment factors for Gen Z workers considered in this report, all four of these cities rank within the top 16 among all US cities.
Joining the aforementioned cities in the top ten are Lincoln, NE, Sioux Falls, SD, Appleton, WI, Sheboygan, WI, and Missoula, MT. Again, these cold-weather cities provide excellent opportunities for Gen Z workers in the employment category, while also ranking inside the top 50 for affordability.
While the social scene might fall behind some of the larger cities covered later in this report, the opportunity to earn a great income in the workforce in these places cannot be overlooked.

Short-term rentals are 'here to stay,' so Fox Cities hotels seek 'level playing field'
By Becky Jacobs, Appleton Post-Crescent, April 4, 2024, subscription may be needed to view
Oshkosh essentially had Airbnbs before "Airbnb" was a thing, according to Pam Seidl, executive director of the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Years ago, people rented out their homes during EAA's AirVenture week, Seidl said, and the Oshkosh Convention and Visitors Bureau ran a site to coordinate the listings.
It doesn't work that way anymore, but looking back, Seidl said, "no one ever thought how that concept would evolve to where it is now."
Today, short-term rentals — also known as "Airbnbs," "VRBOs" and "tourist rooming houses" — regularly operate across the Fox Cities.
Exactly how many is difficult to pin down. The Post-Crescent identified about 120 listings in late 2023, by compiling data from state and local agencies. Meanwhile, Seidl estimated there are probably between 300 and 500 listings for the area in any given month.

New business creation, livability cited as keys to rural growth
By Aaron Holbrook, Insight on Business, March 31, 2024
Rapid shifts in the workforce and increasing hybrid and remote work opportunities are transforming rural communities in Wisconsin.
The result is a shift in how communities can and should invest in economic development efforts, with a focus on new business creation and livability potentially producing the best results.
Those were some of the takeaways from the annual Rural Economic Summit hosted by the University of Wisconsin Extension March 28.
Karl Martin, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, said the biggest challenges for Wisconsin’s rural counties are a need for health care professionals, a scarcity of affordable housing, the need for broadband access and a shortage of labor.
He said the UW Extension is trying to address those challenges in a variety of ways, but emphasized that “new business formation is critical to rural economic development.”
That point was reiterated by Steve Deller from the UWEX Department of Ag and Applied Economics.
“The engine for economic development from a jobs perspective is new business formation,” Deller said.

Vern’s Cheese under new ownership after 59 years
By Chris Rugowski, The Business News March 25, 2024
Vern’s Cheese, located at 312 W. Main St. in Chilton, has been a staple in the area since 1964 when Vern and Edith Knoespel started with one truck and one rented cooler space.
Fast forward 60 years, and you’ll find that same family-owned and operated company mindset, albeit with a new owner, Ben Novak, who took over ownership in 2023.
Novak said he is bringing a new vision to the company to make Vern’s a one-stop shop for full-service food distribution that will help simplify systems and be more efficient for their customers, while providing the same level of quality they’ve been providing for the last 60 years.
He said it should be noted that while they prioritize cheese and distribute all of your favorite Wisconsin cheese brands, Vern’s is a full-service food distributor.
