Life As Gift

"Wise and virtuous men and women through the ages have sought the highest good in devotion to freedom, justice, peace, truth, and beauty...God has endowed humans with capacities to make the world serve their needs and to enjoy its good things. Life is a gift to be received with gratitude and a task to be pursued with courage. People are free to seek life within the purpose of God: to develop and protect the resources of nature for the common welfare, to work for justice and peace in society, and in other ways to use their creative powers for the fulfillment of human life."

-from The Confession of 1967

Presbyterian Church (USA) Book of Confessions

Stewardship Dedication this Sunday

This Sunday, October 12, is Dedication Sunday in which we dedicate to God’s service all of our 2026 Stewardship pledges. Dedication will take place at both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. We ask that all pledges be received by this Sunday. Learn more about the ministries your gift supports and make your pledge at the link below. A special donor has offered to match all new gifts received by this Sunday by pledgers under the age of 40. All gifts are vital, and none is too small.

Please join us for our third annual “Blessing of the Animals” this Sunday, October 12, at 6 p.m. in the front yard of the Land Building. Bring your pets–on a leash or in a crate/carrier/container–for a short worship service, a blessing, and light refreshments. For those pets who do not travel well, a photo can be a good representative! Our offering will be donations of pet food to our local SPCA. Please RSVP to Pastor Sarah at sarah@scapc.org, no later than October 9.

Help Unload Our New Organ!

On Monday, October 13, an 18-wheeler full of parts for our new organ will pull up to our front door on St. Charles Avenue. We will begin the process of unloading the truck while simultaneously loading the sanctuary (and likely the chapel as well!). We’ll have lots of manly muscle on hand to take care of the heavier bits, but if you’d like to come and help us move in some of the lighter stuff, feel free to show up on Monday at 8:00 a.m. (or later in the morning if you can’t swing being here that early). We can certainly use the help!

PINTS Classic Tennis Tournament

It’s that time again! Time for the 3rd Annual PINTS Classic Tennis Tournament! Join us for this adults-only event at the City Park Tennis Courts on Saturday, October 18 from 4-6 p.m. Suggested $10 donation per player. We’ll have drinks and light snacks and head to Blue Oak to celebrate afterwards! RSVP at scapc.org/tennis or on the SCAPC app. Questions? Email Caitlin, caitlin@scapc.org.

Spiritually Hungry Women:

New Study

Next week, the Spiritually Hungry Women group will begin a study of The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times by Jane Goodall. Weekly meetings are held on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. in the Land Building. Contact Beth Poe with any questions.

40/50's Saints Watch Party

Join us for the 40/50's Saints Watch Party! We'll meet on Sunday, October 19 at Urban South (1645 Tchoupitoulas St.) for the Saints vs. Bears game which kicks off at noon.

Challenger Class Retreat for 4th & 5th Graders

The Challenger Class annual retreat will take place October 24-26 at Tickfaw State Park and is open to all 4th and 5th graders, regardless of church affiliations. Our theme this year is “Why Follow Jesus?”. We will leave from the church Friday at 5:00 p.m. and return Sunday morning. The cost is $120. Register at scapc.org/challenger-retreat or on the SCAPC app.

Aden Program Training

Join us for a special Aden Training Program designed for anyone who is around a person with dementia. You’ll learn tips on communicating and interacting with people with dementia; brain change and the 5 different types of dementia; what a typical day at Aden looks like and more. Choose between Wednesday October 22 or Wednesday, October 29 from noon - 2:30pm in the Land Building. All are invited to attend. No commitment to volunteering is required. RSVP Marti McEnery or Kat Songy: aden@scapc.org.

Interested in Seminary?

Have you ever wondered what seminary would look like? Perhaps you are in college discerning what is next or you are considering a second career or post-retirement adventure? Two representatives from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary will be present at SCAPC throughout the second week of October, and available for in-person conversations to any who may be interested to learn more about what theological education looks like. If you’d like to set up a personal discernment conversation with our friends from Austin Seminary, please contact Pierce Young at pierce@scapc.org.

Advent Devotionals & Art Request

This year we are centering our Adent Devotion on the Jesse Tree Symbols and Bible Stories. What is a Jesse Tree? A Jesse Tree is a way of preparing for Advent by journeying through the stories on Jesus’s family tree. Each day of Advent, there will be a Bible story about someone on Jesus’s family tree and an ornament symbolizing the story on the Jesse Tree. Through the Jesse tree we will see how God prepared for Jesus to be born through many generations.

We are looking for two different things to be signed up for each day of the advent devotional – devotion writers (about 300 words) and art (new or already created to go with devotions, can be any type - we will just need a picture to put in the devotional book). Kids of all ages are encouraged to sign up as well! Visit our Advent page for details and to sign up. Contact Katie@scapc.org for questions or more information.

Sunday School Adult Classes

First and Second Samuel | Sept. 7 - Nov. 23 | Phifer Library

During the reigns of Saul and David as recorded in First and Second Samuel, the people of Israel experience fear, disappointment, heartache, and betrayal. The compelling theme that weaves its way through these two books and into our lives is the need to balance both the gift of life from God and the promise of God’s steadfast love with the ever-present human temptation to take control and usurp God’s authority.

Lessons from the Lectionary | Sept. 7 - Nov. 23 | 2nd floor conference room | led by Caitlin Wallace-Rowland

Join us as we deep-dive into the lectionary scriptures of the day’s service. This discussion-based class will use commentaries and other resources to guide us as we learn about the week’s text—reading it together, discussing what we think it means, how we can connect it to our lives, and what we think God is calling us to do. Together we will add greater depth to our understanding of the scripture behind each week’s sermon.

New Members

Please join us in welcoming Sean Chaney (pictured) and Will Cockerham who became SCAPC members on Sunday! Sean is pictured here with wife and SCAPC member Jessie Bruggers and daughter Hazel.
