March Program Newsletter

A Note from our Program Managers

In February we kicked off our new Leisure Explorers program with a full roster of participants. This first 6-week program focuses on beginner tennis skills thanks to the knowledge and experience of professional tennis instructor, Roxanne Kilpatrick. Roxanne brings over twenty years of experience working with students with learning disabilities including individuals with Autism and ABA training.

Stay tuned for the next program in the Leisure Explorers series beginning in April… Building on the Spectrum led by our very own, Ray Guarino! This program will bring the traditional fun of Building and introduce new mediums, projects, and skills.

In-person Playing on the Spectrum got off to a great start, focusing on winter Olympic themed activities. Due to high demand, we adjusted our program to include ages 6-11 years old and expanded by offering two sessions. We'll be trying this model again in March. **Read on below for our new program for ages 3-6.

Teen Night was a great success this month. Participants were thrilled with our new format, which allowed for more activity choices such as games, air hockey, video games, and music.

Young Adult Hangout continues to draw a variety of new and returning participants. We look forward to seeing you in March for movie night.

You may see some new faces in the coming months as we welcome eager volunteers and new staff members to the AFC team!

As always, feel free to reach out with any questions about our programs!

AFC has a new program for ages 3-6 to enjoy with a family member!

In the Me and My Pal play group, pre-school aged autistic children and their "pal" will do a variety of movement and music activities with our skilled and caring clinicians. This program is designed to introduce your little one to AFC while they build gross motor skills, get a little silly, and above all PLAY and have fun!

When registering, please note one ticket registers two individuals, a young child on the spectrum and a parent or older sibling who will also participate in the play group.

Tyson's Run Coming Soon to Theaters

Autism is getting representation on the silver screen and we wanted to share. We think it's great that Tyson is played by Major Dodson, an autistic actor!

SYNOPSIS: When fifteen-year-old Tyson attends public school for the first time, his life is changed forever. While helping his father clean up after the football team, Tyson befriends champion marathon runner Aklilu. Never letting his autism hold him back, Tyson becomes determined to run his first marathon in hopes of winning his father's approval.

With the help of an unlikely friend and his parents, Tyson learns that with faith in yourself and the courage to take the first step, anything is possible.
