Our next branch program is March 26 at 10:30 am via zoom and will feature nationally known economist Jon Haveman, founder and executive director of the National Economic Education Delegation (NEED), who will speak on the fundamental economics of the Black White Wealth Gap. Jamillah Jordan, Marin County’s new Equity Officer, will brief us on Marin County’s race equity action plan (specifically projects related to mental health, economic opportunity and housing/homelessness) as well as the county’s plan for participatory budgeting of $2.5 million to be spent on racial equity projects in Marin. Jon gave his presentation to the Behind the Headlines group a year ago (or maybe two—the last two years blend together!). It was truly enlightening. Jamillah is new to the County, so this will be a great opportunity for us to meet her and understand her role. The Zoom link follows, but please watch for the separate invitation mid-month and RSVP to let us know you will be attending.

SAY HELLO TO KATHY COLDIRON
Kathy’s timing for a move to Marin after several years in St. Helena wasn’t great – right at the beginning of the pandemic. Since she hasn’t been able to get out and meet new people in the past few years, she is happy to join AAUW Marin and start forging new friendships. Kathy is a California native, followed her older sister to college in the Midwest, and has had a varied professional career, from handling in store advertising for the Gap, to winery sales and tasting hostess to a reading specialist. Kathy was very active with volunteer organizations in Napa County but the increasing summer heat and fires spurred her to move to cooler Marin. Now retired, she is happy to be able to hike and explore the hills around her Mill Valley home and connect with children again through volunteering with the Experience Corps reading program. She is looking forward to joining interest groups like our reading groups and we are looking forward to her being an active member of AAUW Marin. Welcome!

This month is the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Marin Branch of AAUW.
There were twenty women who, on March 20, 1932, became original charter members.
Since then, some of the Branch’s accomplishments have been establishing or helping to establish everything from a cooperative nursery school and Pixie Park for young children in Ross, to hosting a State Spring Conference, forming the Marin County Status of Women’s Commission, and the Marin Women’s Hall of Fame. In 1994 the branch hosted the first “Can Do Days” for middle school girls to discover careers in math and science and since 1998 hosted middle school girls to the Tech Trek summer camp at Stanford.
In 2002 the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund was created to benefit College of Marin and Dominican University Students. This effort was led by Mary Mossteller, Nancy Lubamersky and Georgia Schall, all pf whom are still current members.
Since that time the Branch has created a directory of organizations serving Marin, partnered with Dominican University on Start Smart and engaged both Dominican and College of Marin as university partners. Along with College of Marin the Branch held a STEM day for middle school and ninth grade students.
Currently, Cherie Sorokin serves on the AAUW National board of directors. Dottie Burk and Dale Satake served on AAUW California committees. Dale Satake became chair of the National Achievement Committee.
Along with these accomplishments AAUW Marin has given financial support to our local colleges, AAUW programs (Tech Trek and NCCWSL), as well as generously contributing to the National mission through AAUW Funds.

GROUP ANNOUNCEMENTS:
AAUW Behind the Headlines
Behind the Headlines will be discussing a 2009 TED Talk by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie on the danger of a single story. Her remarks are as, or perhaps even more, relevant today. If you aren’t on the email list for this Interest Group, please contact Cherie Sorokin at cheryl.sorokin@gmail.com. Date of the meeting is Wednesday, March 9, at 6:00 pm. Via Zoom.
The New Yorker Reading Group. This month we are reading articles on a wide variety of topics, including the Good Night Moon author, King Tut, spousal activism on the Supreme Court, the coal industry, and others. All are welcome to join us. If you would like to be on the email list and receive the articles we are reading and discussing at the March 14 meeting, please email either co-leader for the Zoom link: Phyllis Kuehn phyllisk@sonic.net or Olivia Ruel oliviacelello@icloud.com. The New Yorker reading group meets on the second Monday of the month at 1:00 via zoom.
The Nonfiction Reading Group. We are meeting on March 28 at 1:00 on Zoom to discuss Stacey Abrams’ Our Time is Now. Celebrated national leader and best-selling author Stacey Abrams offers a blueprint to end voter suppression and empower citizens. A recognized expert on fair voting and civic engagement, Abrams chronicles a chilling account of how the right to vote and the principle of democracy have been and continue to be under attack. Stacey Abrams is running for governor of Georgia again after a narrow and very questionable defeat two years ago. This is our second book in the series about the African American history and experience. If you would like to be on the group’s email list and join us, please email either co-leader for the Zoom link: Phyllis Kuehn phyllisk@sonic.net or Olivia Ruel oliviacelello@icloud.com. The nonfiction reading group meets on the 4th Monday of the month at 1:00 via Zoom.
