Meet February featured artist: Joan Sinatra Hathaway

In her words: "For my entire adult life, I have been involved in the arts. I have been making pottery for over thirty years, but my interests also include all the studio arts; drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, quilting and jewelry making. As a working artist and teacher, I have worked with all of these art forms. I was a museum educator at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, and then the Assistant Director of the Fitchburg Art Museum and Director of the Museum School. In 1997 I joined the faculty of Cushing Academy where I taught ceramics, photography, art journaling, and art history.  After retiring in 2019, I continue to make art in my home studio in Ashburnham.  The surrounding landscape with beautiful views is inspiration for the glazes in my ceramic work.  My work in photography is inspired by the idea that to pay attention is the way to have a meaningful life. I hope each photograph creates a mood, captures a moment or evokes a memory.  Most recently, I have been making hand-made books. Throughout history each culture has made books with available materials. In contemporary culture books have become another medium for artistic expression. I hope my artwork brings a little beauty and joy in to the every day world of the people with whom I share my work."

The 6000 Circle Project - April Exhibition

The Women’s Caucus for Art is collaborating with The Calling to create 6000 circles. The circle is a symbol of balance, unity, and feminine energy. Between March and November 2024, artists of all genders around the world are being called to create circles that honor the feminine. The project kicks off in March in honor of Women’s History Month and the following time period is based on the nine months of gestation.

Each participating chapter of the WCA has chosen a different way to answer this call. The MA chapter has chosen the specific theme of The Mother Cycle and over the nine months we will be exhibiting our circles all around the state. There are many different ways that this theme can be interpreted: mothering, being mothered, the life cycle, mother earth, the role of the mother in society, etc. Members have chosen their own interpretation of this theme and a variety of materials to create their 18-inch circles. We created our circles in March, now in April we are having our first exhibition. This first exhibition will be on view at Main Street Studios until the end of the month.

We hope that this exhibition will continue to grow month to month. If you are interested in submitting a circle contact Joanne Stowell at stowell.joanne@yahoo.com. Membership is not required to participate.

There will be a reception for this exhibition on Sunday, April 21, immediately following the presentation. Join us for both or stop by from 4:00-6:00PM for the reception.

The Fall Foliage Art Studio Tour (FFAST) is an annual Columbus Day weekend event in the Monadnock Region of southern New Hampshire.
