As many of you know, I usually pick two to three tours per year to partially accompany myself. The lucky ones in the beginning of 2025 are South Sudan (Jan 23 - Jan 30, 2025) and Burundi (Jan 30 -  Feb 04, 2025). Both offer unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences in Africa, with rich cultures, exotic tribes, stunning landscapes, and a sense of adventure. Out of the seven participants signed on both tours, I had the joy of meeting 5 of them previously on other trips so it will surely be a joyful reunion. South Sudan is an unexplored part of Africa that offers amazing encounters with some of the continent’s most colorful ethnic groups and tribes who have lived this primitive life for millennia. Tribes have distinct scarring as well as elaborate facial and body decorations and our tour will explore several of those clans. Then, heading to Burundi, one of the world’s smallest countries, which is mountainous and is packed with surprises and unique cultural traditions. mysteries and legends. Be awed by the magnificence of the Karera Waterfalls, a natural wonder that exemplifies the untouched beauty of Burundi's landscape. Let the cascading waters mesmerize you as you appreciate the pristine environment and unspoiled serenity of this breathtaking location. The highlight of your adventure is a sensational performance by the renowned Royal Drummers of Burundi. Delight in the rhythmic beats and intricate movements of this mesmerizing tradition, a cultural heritage passed down through generations. Experience the vibrant energy and captivating charm of these talented musicians, leaving you with memories to cherish forever. Given the ease of obtaining visas, we can still take a couple of more participants with us, so I invite anyone who is an Africa-Addict like me to join those two trips back-to-back.

Another amazing spring trip if you have not yet made plans for the season when flowers blossom all over and the mountains are covered with green in parts of the Mediterranean region is Eastern Turkey. Anyone who has been before to Turkey and fell in love with its culture, cuisine, history and hospitality should consider seeing the other part of the country, the East that is still neither commercial nor touristy as the west BUT contains marvels. It’s an adventure to a “less-explored” region, visiting isolated ancient sites and immersing in the Kurdish “often misunderstood” culture. As usual, we present this tour twice a year - in the spring and the fall and we invite you to join one of them if you have not yet seen the “other Turkey”. Our clients have always come back elated with the array of the beautiful boutique hotels we use, the delectable Turkish cuisine, and the fantastic weather and scenery, but most of all, they are invariably deeply touched by the abundance of near-magical historical sites that not only delight the eye but also captivate both soul and mind. It is also noteworthy that our Turkish guide in the East (Ms. Aysel) is the best in the industry, a fact that no doubt enhances the continued sterling success of all our tours to Turkey. Check out our April 17 - May 02, 2025 tour.

We have made an update to our Afghanistan tour scheduled for May 22 - Jun 05, 2025 and Sep 29 - Oct 13, 2025. The May tour will now be led by our experienced Tour Manager, Nancy Weber. Nancy brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise, ensuring a comprehensive and insightful experience for all participants. She has successfully led many tours for us and has been to Afghanistan before and created some fascinating bonds with our local staff there who will ensure providing an amazing experience for you. While our September tour will be led by our capable tour lecturer, Miklos Sarkozy. Miklos has previously led many trips to this wonderful country and his archaeological background will provide a unique perspective, enhancing the overall experience for travelers. Both leaders are committed to delivering an exceptional journey through Afghanistan’s rich cultural and historical landscape.

Afghanistan is rich in ancient marvels, including the architectural wonders of Herat, with its intricately tiled mosques and the UNESCO-listed Citadel of Herat, showcasing the city's deep history. Bamyan is famous for its ancient Buddha statues, symbols of the Silk Road, surrounded by stunning cliffs. Explore treasures like Balkh, the "Mother of Cities," and the Islamic architecture of Kabul as well as the intriguing medieval city of Mazar-E-Sharif with its blue tiled mosque of Hazrat Ali, considered to be one of the most iconic mosques in the Near East. Each destination reveals unique aspects of Afghanistan's heritage. This journey promises adventure, discovery, and the warmth of Afghan hospitality, enriched by diverse culinary delights. After the takeover by Taliban in August 2021, the country has become much safer than before and despite differences between the countries and their regime, the people of Afghanistan remain superbly hospitable to visitors and very intrigued to meet Americans face-to-face as citizens who care about the human common denominator.

We wanted to provide a quick update on our Bangladesh program. Our last two trips were sold out and the upcoming one that begins this week is also sold out and unbelievably our February 2025 tour is completely full as well! Hence, we are encouraging you if you are interested to lock your spot on our November 11 - November 24, 2025 tour, led by a lovely Islamic Architecture expert: Iman AbdulFattah.

Start your journey in Dhaka, the capital city, where the old and new blend seamlessly. Lose yourself in the chaotic yet captivating streets of Old Dhaka, where rickshaws buzz through narrow lanes filled with vibrant markets and mouthwatering street food. Dhaka is also a hub for contemporary art and culture, with plenty of art galleries and theaters worth exploring. Bangladesh is steeped in a rich cultural heritage that is sure to fascinate history buffs. Travel to the ancient city of Paharpur and explore the impressive Somapura Mahavi-hara, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in the Indian subcontinent. For those interested in traditional arts and crafts, visit the pottery village of Rajbari or witness the skilled artisans of Dhaka creating beautiful Jamdani sarees. Our tour visits The Chittagong Hill Tracts which are situated in southeastern Bangladesh, bordering India and Myanmar/Burma and is a destination of its own. It is a region home to 11 different tribes whose language, cultural history, dress attire and religion (which is Buddhist while the rest of Bangladesh is Islamic) differ significantly in comparison to the rest of the country.

These communities have distinct cultural and ethnic identities that set them apart from the Bengali majority. While they identify as Bangladeshis, their struggle centers around preserving their unique heritage, languages, and ancestral lands. Unlike the signature surrounding flatlands, the landscape contains an array of plentiful rolling hills, lakes and waterfalls.

Our summer flagship tour is to Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi scheduled on August 16 - August 29, 2025, which still has a few remaining spots available. This incredible journey, during which we will be getting in touch with the rich cultural heritage of those three countries and enjoying their exotic natural scenery and wildlife, will culminate with the best trek ever to meet the mountain gorillas of the Bwindi impenetrable forest! Remember that for those concerned about joining this tour from fear of being unable to trek to see the Gorillas, you can hire a team of strong helpers who carry you both ways for a fee of approximately $300. Begin in Uganda, located on the East African Plateau, to explore bustling Kampala city and learn about the history of “Buganda.” At Kibale National Park, discover the chimpanzees, and explore Sempaya Hot Springs, commonly known as the “male” (Mumbugu) and “female” (Nyasimbi) hot springs. A highlight of your visit will be the opportunity for rare, up-close encounters with the endangered mountain gorillas. The journey continues across the border into Rwanda, “Land of a Thousand Hills,” home to threatened wildlife species and many endemic birds. On a trekking expedition, see the golden monkey - one of the rarest primates in the world and experience Rwandan culture firsthand at a traditional village. No tour of Rwanda would be complete without a stop at the Genocide Museum in Kigali or a stop for a drink at the famous Hotel des Mille Collines, also known as “Hotel Rwanda,” known for its role as a shelter during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

From Kigali, it is just a short flight to Burundi to learn about a culture based on local traditions and the influence of neighboring countries. Visit the disputed “Source of the Nile” and the impressive Karera Waterfalls. The finale of this fantastic adventure will be a lively ritual drum performance by the famous Royal Drummers, a mesmerizing technique passed down from generation to generation.

Our tour to two amazing destinations in Central Africa are Chad and Cameroon. In lush and colorful Cameroon, you will see ancient yet still thriving traditional cultures, renowned art forms, flamboyantly colorful festivals, mask dances, and a dazzling ethnic mosaic, all of which are the exotic gems of tribal Africa. We decided to offer this trip only once a year where it is being in Chad coincides with the colorful Gerowol festival (one of the last few genuine and authentic festivals of the world). After landing in N’Djamena and spending the first night, we will travel to the Chari Baguirmi pasture area in the heart of the Sahel. With the help of our local partners, we will find the nomadic camps of the two Wodaabe clans that will perform the Gerewol ceremony, which we will attend for two full days. By the end of the rainy season and the start of the dry season in October, the numerous nomadic Wodaabe families concentrate around Dourbali and Massenya. These families belong to the two main Wodaabe clans in Chad: the Soudousoukaia and the N’Djapto. It is at this time, just before they disperse to central and southern Chad, that the Gerewol ceremonies take place, an impressive and colorful beauty contest in the middle of the Sahel. Dates are Oct 09 - Oct 24, 2025.

That is a piece of news unrelated to a trip BUT it showcases a wonderful lecture by one of our delightful scholars who leads several tours with us. It is free and will surely whet your appetite to visit Egypt again and perhaps you would like to join one of her tours like the Bangladesh one in fall 2025.
