News
Expert advice on website and social media opportunities was shared during a day of listening and learning at St George’s, Leeds. Organised by the national church’s digital communications team, this was the launch event for a Digital Labs Learning Roadshow, which will now tour other venues around the country.  Read more here
Bishop Nick has paid tribute to the former Bishop of Bradford, the Rt Revd Roy Williamson, who has passed away aged 86. “I regret to announce that Bishop Roy Williamson has died. He was Bishop of Bradford from 1984 to 1991, when he moved on to the Diocese of Southwark,” Bishop Nick said.  Read more here
Yorkshire-based Christian charity Jesus Shaped People are hoping to recruit a new Team Leader to further their mission across the country. Jesus Shaped People (JSP) encourage churches, particularly those serving marginalised communities, to re-shape their vision and work based on five priorities that Jesus adopted in his three year ministry.  Read more here
The human cost of Hurricane Dorian which devastated the Bahamas has personal significance for one of our clergy, who grew up on one of the worst-hit islands. Revd Ruth Downson, assistant curate at All Saints’, Bingley still has strong links with Elbow Cay and told how many of her family’s friends are still suffering after the havoc wreaked by the huge winds. As harvest festivals take place across our diocese this weekend, St Andrew’s Aysgarth has hit on the novel idea of a grand Mouse Hunt. Children are invited to scamper and scurry around the Grade II listed church, including its famous Jervaulx Screen, and discover hidden “harvest mice” from 10am on Saturday, September 21. Top advice on how to improve and maintain green church spaces was shared at a recent conference which drew delegates from the diocese and beyond. Caring for your Churchyard was a day of talks organised at St Chad's, Headingley by our Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC). Read more here
Six new canons and four honorary canons of Ripon Cathedral have been installed at a joyful choral evensong. Dean John Dobson installed six new canons including Sir Andrew Lawson-Tancred of Alborough Manor, who became a capitular canon, and former Yorkshire Woman of the Year, Judith Donovan CBE who was made an honorary lay canon. Christians in Bradford who help keep people safe on the city’s night-time streets are calling out for more volunteers. ‘Bradford Street Angels’ was originally set up in 2007 by an Anglican priest to help keep the streets of the city centre safe.  Read more here
The Anglican Diocese of Leeds has announced that the latest Place of Welcome opened on Wednesday (September 11th 2019) in Birkby, Huddersfield. Places of Welcome are run by local community groups who want everyone in their neighbourhood to have a place to go for a friendly face, a cup of tea and a conversation if and when they need it. Restoration work at St Edmund’s, Roundhay , has received a £60,000 boost to help secure its future. The National Lottery Heritage Fund grant is a substantial contribution towards the £130,000 project for restoration work required to the exterior of the building.  Read more here
The first full immersion baptisms in living memory at a lake in Upper Wensleydale have taken place, watched by a joyful crowd of Christians. Bathers, sailors, paddle-boarders, bikers and picnickers at stunning Semerwater also watched the wonderful event in bright Bank Holiday sunshine - accompanied by Hawes Silver Band at full throttle. An ancient window has been restored to its former glory at St Peter’s Felkirk, thanks to generous giving by parishioners. The ornate west window, which dates back to the 13th century, will now be a focal point of the church’s 900th anniversary celebrations in 2020.  Read more here
Events
The Augustinian Church Choir, from Erfurt, are visiting the Diocese of Leeds next month for a week’s tour to mark 21 years of the partnership between the Diocese with the Erfurt Kirchenkreis. The tour will include visits to churches and cathedrals across the county including the Diocesan cathedrals of Bradford, Wakefield and Ripon, alongside Leeds Minster, Halifax Minster and St Margaret’s Church in Ilkley.  Read more here
Taking place in each of the areas, we are inviting people to join us for Social Media Skills Camps. These evenings aim to bring people to gether to share, discuss and discover how we can best use social media in our churches. The next will be at the Mirfield Centre on Thursday, September 26 at 7pm. A powerful play about dementia will be performed at Ripon Cathedral next month. The Last Memory , a one act work by Calderdale playwright Alan Stockdill, will be performed on Tuesday, October 1 at 7.30pm and admission i s free, with a request for donations to Ripon-based support group, Dementia Forward. The Yorkshire Film Archive will present a fascinating portrait of a city’s history at Bradford Cathedral next month. “Bradford on Film” promises to really dig into the past, with footage selected from a remarkable collection of archive films from the 20th century. The scre ening will take place on Friday, October 4 at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite.
Our Diocese is linked with the Episcopal Church in Sudan. Later this month Mama Samira and Mama Hewaya , both key national leaders of work with women in Sudan, will be visiting our diocese. Throughout their stay ther e will be an opportunity to meet them at a number of events, including one at Leeds Minster on Tuesday, October 1. Find out more here
Climate Crisis and the role of the church is an opportunity to find out more about climate change, pray and lament together, and to hear about the work of Christian Climate Action in raising awareness and promoting change through non-violent direct action. The evening will be held at St George's Church, Leeds and hosted by Rev'd Jon Swales with input from Dr Simon Kittle. Find out more here

Creationtide or the Season of Creation is the period in the annual church calendar, from 1st September to 4th October, dedicated to God as Creator and Sustainer of all life. The Church of England have produced lots of helpful resources available to Download, to help your church or Christian community mark The Season of Creation.  Find out more here
