All the Latest!

Anna Capener, Education Program Director

Greetings everyone! Here is a long overdue update on what has been happening here in Moz at the preschools. As I write I can hear the excited chatter of children on the veranda who are about to eat lunch! This is their last week at school for 2023 before they start their summer holidays. Always seems a bit strange saying that in November!

In the Month of June

The cold weather seems like a distant memory now but the children loved receiving their winter hats in June. Thanks to everyone who has been faithfully knitting these hats over in England. It keeps the children coming to school on the cold mornings and even when the weather warms up they still love to wear them!

In the Month of July

Access to help for children with disabilities can be very difficult here. We were thrilled to be able to help Naomi with this pair of tiny crutches! She has amazed us all with how quickly she adapted to using them - especially how quickly she learnt to go up and down steps! She has a big smile on her face as she walks along with the other children in the line and definitely has a newfound confidence.

In the Month of August

In mid-August there is a short school holiday. We were excited to be able to host another holiday Bible club where we invited local teenagers to come to along to our two school sites. One of the main attractions is getting to play football which is very popular amongst the boys and girls alike! Our theme was ‘trusting in God’. We taught about trusting God for provision, trusting God for protection and trusting God for salvation.

The teachers love dressing up and getting creative for the dramas that tell different Bible stories. Here one of our teachers is dressed up as Goliath!

The ups and downs of life in Mozambique...

Towards the end of August one of our teachers, Zeca, lost his daughter Elisa after a three month battle with Tuberculosis. It was heartbreaking watching him and his family watching her deteriorate while desperately clinging onto the hope that she would recover. I drove him to the hospital minutes after he heard the news that she had passed and it will be hard to forget the brokenness that I saw during that car journey. She was so loved.

The funeral the following day was a beautiful testimony to Elisa’s life and in the days that have followed I have been both challenged and encouraged by Zeca and his wife Graça’s faith and trust as they have walked through such a dark and difficult time.

The Month of September

In September we say a sad goodbye to the cooler weather and embrace, a little reluctantly, the hot sticky and humid weather once more. September saw our ‘stay and play’ sessions where we invite all the local three year olds to come to a series of special play sessions at our creche. This is a great way of preparing them for January 2024 when they will start with us. We are definitely not going to be short of children for next year!

September also saw a new beginning for me as I embark on a two year part-time Masters in Education, International Development and Health Promotion. It is already proving to be very interesting, extremely stretching and is giving me lots of food for thought!

The Month of October

The end of October saw our two graduation ceremonies where we celebrated the progress and achievements of all our preschoolers. It was a joyful occasion and our team were so proud of the children as they performed a drama of Jesus calming the storm. Every single child spoke with enormous confidence in front of the gathered parents. We were beaming with pride to think of how much they have grown this year!

The Month of November

Our school year ends with a two week ‘summer school’ program where the children play lots of games and do lots of fun art and craft activities. As the school year draws to an end we begin to register students for the next academic year. It’s always difficult to believe that another year is over. Many of our students will go onto first grade at the government primary school next year. They will continue to come to us to participate in our ‘after-school program’ where they will receive lessons in Portuguese, Mathematics and Bible so we will walk with them for many years to come!

It might be the end of the dry season (as you can see from the state of the grass on our school field!) but so many trees bloom at this time of year adding stunning colour to the 'brown' of dry season! I hope that whatever season of life you find yourself in - there are whispers of beauty around you filling you with hope. Thank you for all your prayers and encouragement this year. It is the end of my ninth year in Mozambique which is very hard to believe! I so appreciate everyone who has walked with me during my time here. Blessings to you all.
