Revolutionary Gardens
46th Annual Old Newbury Garden Tour Preview
| | |
Well friends, it's happened again - the 46th Garden Tour program book, that keepsake treasure we all love, has arrived, just in time for the tour this weekend. I am grateful to so many people for this printed piece. Bob Watts' gorgeous photographs capture details of the gardens, from flowers to vistas, to a warm beam of light from afternoon sun. Kathie O'Neill brings her characteristic good humor and excellent design skills to bear, and Harborside Printing makes the whole thing come together. And, of course, we are grateful to our sponsors and the garden tour owners, and all the people who make this weekend possible.
Because this letter appears only in the program book, it is generally seen only by ticket-holders, who I assume flip past quickly in search of their next destination. But I wanted to share it with you here, in part because whether or not you are able to come visit these gardens, I hope you will think about Newburyport and the American Revolution, whose ripples are still all around us in this magical place.
| | And since there are so many events to tell you about and the day is so busy, I will leave you with a few of Bob Watts' gorgeous images of this year's gardens. We hope you can join us! | | Something Is Always Cooking... | | |
Goat Cheese with Edible Flowers and Arugula
This is the time of year when we all seem to have a million events to host and attend, and nothing is more cheerful than this easy flowery appetizer. Any edible flower will work; peppery nasturtium, borage, and pansy are shown here. This is a recipe from the cookbook, Martha Stewart's Vegetables.
Ingredients
- 2 large logs (11 ounces each) fresh goat cheese, room temperature
- 1 cup packed arugula, coarsely chopped
- Freshly ground pepper
- 2 cups loosely packed edible blossoms and leaves, coarsely chopped
- Crackers or thinly sliced baguette rounds, for serving
Directions
- Stir 1 goat-cheese log in a bowl until smooth. Mix in arugula, and season with pepper. In another bowl, stir remaining goat-cheese log until smooth. Mix in 1 1/2 cups flowers and leaves, and season with pepper.
- Form each mixture into 2 or 3 disks (each about 1/2 inch thick). Roll in remaining blossoms. Place disks on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate until chilled, about 30 minutes. Serve with crackers or baguette rounds.
Enjoy!
