GREETINGS FROM BCAW
by Hank Posnanski, Jr., BCAW President
As our calendars flip over to 2023, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year! It’s time to recharge our batteries for a fresh start as the bowling season shifts into high gear.

As your new BCAW president, I was excited to lead the BCAW Board of Directors at our winter meeting held last December at New Berlin Ale House in New Berlin. I’d like to congratulate Sunset Bowl proprietor Jaelynn Hoehnen on her appointment to the BCAW board, filling Daniel Patterson’s vacant director position after Patterson was elected vice president. (See separate article.)

Another action taken by our BCAW Board at that meeting involved a strategic plan. The Board approved funding for creating a strategic plan during the 2023 fiscal year. The objective is to set the direction of the BCAW organization for the next five to seven years.

In March, a survey will be distributed to all BCAW member centers asking for input. I encourage as many people as possible to participate in the process of developing the plan by submitting ideas about new or existing programs, ways to improve the organization and so on. Please spread the word to local proprietors in your area that this is your chance to be heard and have a voice in the BCAW.

When it comes to BCAW member benefits, the BPAA Smart Buy program is one of the best. As I mentioned in the last edition of The Headpin News, Smart Buy allows our member centers to take advantage of national pricing and amazing discounts. Through Smart Buy programs such as SYSCO and Pepsi, proprietors can save money on purchases for their concourse, snack bar, bar or lounge, office, control counter and other areas of their bowling centers. Visit www.bpaa.com and www.stemarketing.com for more information about program offerings.

Here’s to a successful and profitable 2023 bowling season!
Young proprietor Hoehnen appointed to
BCAW Board of Directors
The Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin (BCAW) Board of Directors has officially added a new member after the appointment of Jaelynn Hoehnen.

Hoehnen, proprietor of Sunset Bowl in Waukesha, was appointed by BCAW President Hank Posnanski, Jr. to fill Daniel Patterson’s vacant director position after Patterson was elected vice president.

Hoehnen’s appointment was unanimously approved by the BCAW Board at its winter meeting Dec. 12 at New Berlin Ale House in New Berlin, Wis.

“We’re excited to have Jaelynn join us on our board of directors,” said Posnanski, Jr. “We’re looking forward to her bringing to the table a fresh perspective and bold, new ideas. Jaelynn is a smart, young person who has been involved with the sport of bowling as a competitor and who also knows the business side of bowling.”

Hoehnen, 22, is a Carroll University graduate who majored in business administration. She stepped into the proprietor role at Sunset Bowl this past summer after years of gaining experience in the bowling business by handing out shoes and cleaning tables since she was a youngster. Her father, Michael Hoehnen, has owned Sunset Bowl since 1999 and is now stepping back, ready to hand over the proprietor reigns to his daughter.

“My father purchased Sunset Bowl six months before I was born, so it's safe to say that I've been involved in bowling my whole life,” said Jaelynn Hoehnen, who said she has worked at Sunset since she was 14. “Growing up, my goal was to take over the center from my Dad. That childhood dream came true for me in July 2022. As a proprietor, I want to continue the success that my Dad created at Sunset Bowl and promote the sport of bowling.”

In addition, Jaelynn Hoehnen brings years of experience as a highly competitive bowler. After starting off in junior leagues, she began competing in middle school and high school bowling while gaining valuable experience on the lanes in the USBC Junior Gold program and many other scholarship tournaments. Jaelynn Hoehnen, who competed collegiately on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s bowling team, has certified 300 games and an 800 series to her credit.

“I grew up bowling in junior leagues, middle school, high school bowling, Junior Gold, and basically every other scholarship tournament I could make it to,” she said. “I've continued to bowl in leagues, compete in city, state, and national tournaments, and I plan to for as long as I can.”

Now Jaelynn Hoehnen can carry on her family tradition at Sunset while making her mark in yet another area of the bowling industry by serving on the BCAW board.

In other BCAW Board news from the winter meeting:

  • The BCAW Board approved funding for the development of a Strategic Plan during the 2023 fiscal year. The objective is to set the direction of the BCAW organization for the next five to seven years.
  • Funding to make upgrades to the BCAW website also was approved by the board.
  • The 2023 BCAW Annual Meeting, Conference and Trade Show date and location have been approved. The event is scheduled to be held Oct. 2, 2023 at the Hilton Appleton Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis.

Hall of Famer Norm Duke to appear at WI High School State Championships
As part of Storm’s continued support of the BCAW’s Wisconsin High School State Bowling Championships and Storm Scholarship Doubles Tournament, the legendary and popular Norm Duke will make a special appearance at this year’s event March 3-5 at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Weston.

Duke is a PBA and USBC Hall of Famer who has 40 PBA titles (including seven Majors) to his credit. He is third on the all-time PBA Tour title list, behind only Walter Ray Williams, Jr. (47) and Earl Anthony (43). Duke, 58, also has won six PBA50 championships (including two Majors). The two-time PBA Player of the Year became the youngest bowler to win a PBA title in 1983 (18 years, 345 days).

“We are pleased to welcome Norm to be part of our Wisconsin High School State Bowling Championships and Storm Scholarship Doubles Tournament,” said BCAW President Hank Posnanski, Jr. “Our student-athletes, families and coaches will enjoy meeting Norm. Thank you to Storm Products for its generous support of high school bowling in Wisconsin.”

BCAW High School bowling season on a major roll
Youth bowlers across Wisconsin are hitting the lanes in bigger numbers this season compared to last as competition heats up for the BCAW Wisconsin High School Bowling Club.

A total of 326 squads (boys’/co-ed varsity, girls’ varsity and junior varsity) in 14 districts across the state are on the floor for the 2022-23 BCAW high school season. That compares with 291 total teams that competed during the 2021-22 season, which represents roughly a 13% increase.

Regular season competition began Nov. 1 and will wrap up by Feb. 12. The season culminates with the 2023 Wisconsin High School Bowling Club State Championships scheduled March 3-5 at Dales’s Weston Lanes in Weston, Wis. Champions will be crowned for boys’/co-ed and girls’ teams in Divisions 1 and 2, as well as boys’ and girls’ singles.

Volunteers welcome at High School state tournament
Opportunities exist for local coaches and parents to volunteer at the BCAW Wisconsin High School State Bowling Championships March 3-5 at Dale’s Weston Lanes in Weston.

Please spread the word to those at your bowling centers who might have an interest in volunteering their time.

Interested volunteers should contact Patrick Brettingen at the BCAW office: Patrick.Brettingen@bowlwi.com or (262) 783-4292.
Wisconsin Adult-Youth Scholarship Tournament is a win-win for bowlers and centers
Looking for a fun way to generate lineage in your bowling center? The BCAW continues to offer the Wisconsin Adult Youth Scholarship Tournament featuring in-center qualifying. This tournament is open to Wisconsin member and non-member bowling centers. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula centers and youth bowlers are also eligible to participate if they are certified through the Wisconsin State USBC.

Through in-center qualifying events, at least 1 in 4 teams advance to the state finals tournament in each of three age divisions. Youth bowlers will have an opportunity to win scholarships based on a minimum 1:10 ratio, with a guaranteed first place scholarship of $200 in each of three age divisions.

Modeled loosely on some of the past BPAA adult-youth tournament programs, the event will consist of U10, U14 and U18 divisions. There is no family requirement to participate. Additionally, youth bowlers may advance to the State Finals Tournament with more than one adult bowler, increasing their opportunity to win a scholarship. Last year we awarded $4,425 in scholarships at this event.

Qualifying events must be conducted no later than March 18 with entries and payment received in the BCAW office by April 5.

This year's finals will be held at Pla-Mor Lanes in La Crosse over two weekends (April 15 & 16 and April 22 & 23).

BCAW welcomes five Bowlero Corp. centers

The five centers are: Bowlero Wauwatosa, Wauwatosa; AMF West Lanes, Milwaukee; JB’s on 41, Milwaukee; Sabre Lanes, Menasha; and Super Bowl Family Entertainment Center, Appleton.

“We are pleased to welcome Bowlero, Corp. and its Wisconsin centers into the BCAW,” said BCAW President Hank Posnanski, Jr. “Bowlero Corp. has recognized the great value of BCAW programs.”
