Dear Friends,
NewMexicoWomen.Org (NMW.O) has been weaving worlds of gender justice and healing across our state for ten years. Threads of justice, dreams of the future, and love of our communities have created a strong and beautiful tapestry. Your support is the loom on which this work is woven. Thanks to visionary feminist philanthropists like you, this year, NMW.O was able to distribute $1 million to organizations doing powerful gender justice and healing work around the state.
Our Adolescent Girls of Color (AGOC) grants comprise the largest portion of our grantmaking. Now in their 5th year, these grants support organizations working with and for Indigenous girls and young women impacted by the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives; anti-racist and gender justice youth organizing programs; Black girls’ leadership and healing programs; health apprenticeships for immigrant young women of color, and more. The AGOC grantmaking program supports leadership, power building, and healing and represents our deep commitment to investing in girls and gender-expansive youth as our future.
Our Healing Awards program supports reproductive justice leaders and their staff to engage in healing and self-care practices that prevent burnout and address various forms of vicarious trauma. Your dollars are working to keep New Mexico a “safe state” for abortion by supporting reproductive justice movement leaders to prioritize activities like time off, meals together, ceremonies, time in nature, and other forms of healing and community care in the face of an increasingly complex political and social landscape.
This year through our inaugural Healthy Masculinities grant cycle, we supported organizations across the state engaged in healthy masculinities work. These grants aim to address the impacts of a masculinities crisis that includes pervasive mass shootings, gender-based violence, attacks on the body sovereignty of women and the LGBTQ+ community, and high rates of suicide for men and boys. Addressing this crisis is a key part of our gender justice strategy.
This fall marks the seventh year of investment in organizations led by or serving self-identified women and girls, low-income, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and rural communities through our Gender Justice grants. These grants support organizations advocating and organizing for structural level changes including paid family leave, living wages, abortion access, culturally relevant birthing services, transgender rights, and more. The funding also benefits domestic violence programs and sexual assault services in the most rural, Tribal, and underserved communities statewide.
NMW.O’s work is made possible through the intricate fabric of relationships we have woven together over the past ten years. With your increased support, we can continue to invest in gender justice, healthy masculinities, adolescent girls of color, and healing to ensure that New Mexico remains a state where women, girls, and gender-expansive folks can thrive now and for future generations. With gratitude,
