At the Funhouse Commons, we often say “It takes a Village and the Funhouse.” This spring marks an exciting transition in leadership for the Children’s Discovery Foundation Board of Directors, and I’m thrilled to be working with Marcela Barrientos as she steps into the role of Board President, alongside Scott Raun, who will serve as Vice President. Marcela brings deep care for our community and a thoughtful vision for the future, and I’m very much looking forward to working together with both Marcela and Scott as we continue strengthening the Funhouse and the programs that serve our island’s youth.
At the same time, I want to express heartfelt gratitude to Maia Vechey, who has been an incredible leader and partner during my first three years as Executive Director. Maia’s dedication and stewardship helped guide the organization through an important period, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work closely with her. Maia will continue serving on the board and will represent our fiscal sponsorship partnership with The Peach Pit, the inspiring “by teens, for teens” youth center. I have truly enjoyed working with Maia and am also excited that she will now have more time to focus on the important work she and Meagan Gable are doing as founders and leaders of The Peach Pit, supporting youth voice and leadership on Orcas Island.
Leadership is one part of the village that makes the Funhouse possible. Just as important are the local businesses, families, volunteers, and community partners who show up every day to support kids. Together, they create the network of care that helps young people on Orcas Island feel connected, supported, and inspired to grow.
One of the clearest examples of this village in action is the support we receive from Jacob and Jason Linnes, owners of Island Market, who for the past nine years have generously supported Funhouse kids by providing healthy snacks for our programs. Island Market truly embodies the village we are so fortunate to call home. Their steady support helps ensure that kids who walk through our doors feel welcomed, cared for, and nourished—both literally and figuratively. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and their ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of Orcas Island youth.
Inside the Funhouse, there is also a growing sense of excitement as we prepare to open our new Rec & Tech Room this April. This new space will feature a StepManiaX dance machine, pinball, pop-a-shot basketball, foosball, comfy sofas, a tech station, and video gaming. A special thank you goes to Ted and Sarah and their daughter Nova — whose generosity helped make it possible for us to acquire the StepManiaX dance machine, an incredible addition that we know kids and teens are going to love.
According to the San Juan County Youth Community Health Assessment, youth themselves identified a need for more recreational activities and social opportunities, along with stronger mental health supports. The report also emphasizes that safe gathering spaces where youth can connect, build friendships, and participate in positive activities are key protective factors that support resilience and emotional well-being. By creating a space where young people can move, play, socialize, and unwind after school, the Rec & Tech Room will help strengthen those protective factors and support healthier youth development across our community.
Spring also brings some of our favorite community traditions. On April 23rd, we will once again celebrate Día de los Niños after school, honoring children and the joy they bring to our community. Soon after, on May 2nd, we’ll host our annual Science Fair, where kids of all ages are welcome to share their curiosity, creativity, and discoveries.
Thank you for being part of the Funhouse community and for supporting the work we do. Because of you, we are able to create meaningful opportunities for kids and youth to explore, connect, and thrive.
It takes a Village, and the Funhouse!
