NPR plans for special coverage contingencies In the event that federal indictments should be issued in the Jan. 6 special counsel investigation, NPR News is making preparations now for special coverage. Once the newsroom confirms such charges, plans are to preempt regular programming for special coverage with reporting and analysis from NPR correspondents and editors. In addition, the official indictment documents and any video of NPR's reporting would be available online. Stay tuned!

Public media's federal funding is targeted again Federal legislation that eliminates funding for public radio and television is under consideration in the U.S. House. At stake is funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distributes those funds to local stations across the country. KGOU's Community Service Grant from CPB amounts to about ten percent of our annual budget, a significant loss if that funding were to be discontinued. Protect My Public Media is a grassroots organization that advocates for public media funding; you can learn more about its efforts and join in, if you're so inclined: ProtectMyPublicMedia.org

To celebrate his life and legacy, independent radio producer Paul Ingles has put together an hour of performances and conversations in Tony Bennett: Class Act. KGOU Readers Club discusses Going Back to T-Town: The Ernie Fields Territory Big Band So-called 'territory bands' traveled from town to town, playing dances and stage shows, and Tulsa-based Ernie Fields led one of the best. His big band played jazz and swing from the 1920s through the '60s. In Going Back to T-Town, Ernie’s daughter Carmen tells her father's story in his own voice: how he weathered the ups and downs of the music industry and maintained his optimism even while he faced entrenched racial prejudice and threats of violence. Carmen Fields joins KGOU's Logan Layden on the KGOU Readers Club Monday, July 31 at 1 p.m., with a repeat airing Sunday, Aug. 6 at noon. About the book

NPR series: Hip-hop turns 50 Hip-hop was born on Aug. 11, 1973 at a block party in the Bronx. That event 50 years ago kicked off what has become the most popular music genre in the U.S. and a driving force of pop culture around the world. NPR will mark this milestone anniversary with stories that cross programs and platforms, including Morning Edition, Weekend Edition, and All Things Considered, plus extended focus on All Songs Considered (early Sundays at 12:30 a.m. on KGOU) and a look through five decades of Tiny Desk Concert archives.
