ONE Thing

Hi Fit School Friend!

I love introducing you to experts in a variety of fields. I've asked that they each share just ONE thing that they think can make the biggest difference in your physical, financial, nutritional, and/or mental health.

So, here we go. I introduce to you...

Elodie Chaplain's ONE Thing

Engage in Resourcing

You know that feeling of deep contentment you experience during, or after, doing something you love? That’s what I like to think of as the basic idea behind Resourcing. I’m about halfway through a 2 year Craniosacral Therapy training program, where I first encountered this concept. My teacher, Lauren Christman, defines resources as the people, activities, qualities and energies that we draw upon to support us during times of stress. She encourages us to consider external resources: partners, family & friends, your home, hobbies, habits, places, animals, objects, recognitions, art, or nature; as well as internal resources: sensations, breath, affirmations, mantras, meditation/mindfulness, visualizations, dreams or creative expression.

My ONE thing for you: make a list of your resources. Even a mental list, if you hate making lists. It can be a profoundly impactful thought exercise. In my experience, it has made me more aware of my resources and has helped me to prioritize incorporating as many into each day as possible. I would encourage you to include ideas that take just a few minutes. Aim for one per day to start. Keep adding to it over time, as more possibilities present themselves. If it feels good for you, consider sharing your list with friends and family to help inspire each other!

Here are some of my favorite resources, perhaps some of them can inspire you too. The smell of lavender. Fall colors. Solo hiking. Eating scrumptious food. Hammocking. Forest Bathing (for a guided experience, April Claxton is fabulous). Listening to a favorite album. Receiving bodywork. Showering by candlelight. Focusing on my five senses. Attending live celtic music. Cuddling with a purring kitty cat. Talking to a good friend. 4-7-8 breathing. Biking on quiet county roads. Watching leaves dance in the wind and wispy clouds wander in the sky. Hugs.

In the end, the keys to Resourcing are both recognizing what replenishes you and also making time for those things, people and moments that bring you joy, renew your soul, and leave you feeling more refreshed, more at peace. When you have those moments, make note of them. Store the feeling of contentment, as a reserve, a resource for your future self…. and for your present self, as you actively engage in Resourcing!

About Elodie Chaplain, LMT, PLLC

I've been a licensed massage therapist in Bellingham for just over 6 years and I feel like I've found my very happiest place in Bellingham, and my calling in bodywork. Both bring me such joy. I feel incredibly grateful to live in a place that offers such easy access to trails, forests, mountains and water, all of which are an enormous part of Resourcing for me. I’m also profoundly grateful that my work can help people feel better, and allows me to keep learning more about the human body - it’s so intriguing and amazing!!!
