(BALTIMORE, Md., 1/6/21) - The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today condemned pro-Trump rioters’ violent insurrection, anarchy and property destruction on Capitol Hill as U.S. lawmakers prepared to move forward with the constitutional process of certifying the 2020 election results.
The civil rights group acknowledged law enforcement agencies in Maryland, including the Prince George's County Police Department and the Montgomery County Police Department, who responded to calls for help from Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to control the mob and establish order after reports that the Defense Department initially refused to deploy the National Guard to the U.S. Capitol.
In a statement, Director of CAIR’s office in Maryland Zainab Chaudry said:
“This unconstitutional assault on our democracy is an egregious attempt to threaten and intimidate lawmakers and overturn legitimate election results. A sitting U.S. president is directly responsible for encouraging sedition. Every tool at Congress’ disposal must be used to hold all those involved accountable to the fullest extent of the law, while acting in accordance to the U.S. Constitution, to protect our democracy from future attacks. We call on our elected leaders at every level of the government to exhibit the moral courage to take swift, decisive action, and we pray for the safety and healing of our country.”
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
