SCAPC's Vision in 1930

Session Resolution excerpt: February 2, 1930, upon the dedication of the Sanctuary, funded in full by a gift from Mrs. William B. Bloomfield

“Mrs. Bloomfield, at this time, is really representing two families—the family of her late lamented and sainted husband, William B. Bloomfield, and her own, the Affleck Family…Their spiritual devotion and influence of their Godly lives will, through this substantial and stately House of Worship, live in the hearts of the present and of future generations. This magnificent Church, erected to the glory of God, dedicated to Christian work and worship, and to the upbuilding and furtherance of Christian character and ideals, will be a lasting and living testimonial and an inspiring memorial to these consecrated families.

"…There is a great challenge in this gift that we must deeply consider. We are debtors all! When thousands with means equal to and greater than hers are carefully guarding their riches, or spending lavishly for their own selfish enjoyment, Mrs. Bloomfield sets herself apart with humility and gratitude to God for His goodness by doing a thing so extravagant and magnanimous, that it should inspire and compel us to so live that our future conduct and lives will be crystalized into acts and deeds that will make us worthy of her great example.”

The Vision Lives On

Today is the Day! 100% of our GiveNOLA Day gifts will support the SCAPC Visionary Fund. Gifts of ALL sizes are welcome. Learn more about the Visionary Fund at scapc.org/visionary-fund.

High School Graduates Breakfast, Blessing, & News

On Sunday, May 17, the Congregational Care Committee will hold a special breakfast from 9:30-10:20 a.m. in the Youth Room for graduating high schoolers and their parents. Graduates will also be given a special gift as they depart for their next steps. If you plan to attend, please email Chris at chrishazlaris@scapc.org and let him know how many family members will be coming. After the brunch during 10:30 worship, all seniors will be honored before the congregation as part of our liturgy!

Let us know where you're heading next so that we can include your future plans in the bulletin and stay in touch as you enter this new phase. Please send information to camille@scapc.org by tomorrow!

Thanks from Raintree

Many thanks go out to the multitude of church members who donated toiletries to Raintree Children & Family Services last month! The adolescent girls at Raintree House were delighted. Of note was a cheerful donation to their kitchen of hand towels to celebrate each holiday pictured here. Thank you for the happiness you bring to these abandoned and neglected teens by giving hope.

Supplies Needed for Grandparent Camp

As part of our theme this summer we will be discussing recycling with our campers. Members are encouraged to bring the following items to church. We are collecting now through May 19 and collection bins are in Frampton Fellowship Hall. Items needed are:

  1. Remnants of red, white, and blue ribbon and material (no yarn please)
  2. Recyclable glass bottles and aluminum. Please rinse out!

Hurricane Preparedness:

What to Do & How You Can Help Others

As we move into hurricane season, the Disaster Response Team, formerly known as RHINO, wants to encourage everyone to have a plan in place. Living where we do, preparation is one way we care for ourselves and for one another.

Please take time this week to think through your hurricane plan:

  • Know where you would go if an evacuation is called.
  • Make sure you have supplies on hand—water, food, medications, and important documents.
  • Have a way to stay informed and a plan to stay in touch with family and neighbors.

As a church, we also want to be part of caring for one another. Check in on someone who may need extra help—especially older members or those who live alone. If you anticipate needing assistance, please let the church office know or contact our Parish Associate for Pastoral Care, Miriam Hollar, at miriam@scapc.org or 504-897-0101, ext. 250.

If you can help, our Disaster Response Team would love more members to join in our work. See Harriet Riley or Greg Beuerman to be part of this team ministering to our community and helping other places in need after disaster strikes.

HIDDEN VOICES: THE LESSER-KNOWN WOMEN OF THE BIBLE

April 12-May 17 | second floor conference room | led by Ashley Brown

Many of the women in scripture appear only for a moment, sometimes unnamed, sometimes easily overlooked, yet their stories hold profound wisdom about courage, suffering, faith, and God’s surprising work in the world. Through study and discussion, we explore how these women shaped the biblical story.

AMERICAN RELIGION @250

May 3-17 | Land Building Riverside Room | led by Chris Currie

America has experienced significant changes demographically, sociologically, culturally, and religiously over the past decade. While we cannot make sense of all it, this class explores the religious shifts that have occurred most recently and what they might explain.

This class also explores the demographic changes in class and culture that have occurred throughout the country and led to changes in religious beliefs but also changes in political polarization and cultural upheaval. Lastly, we will discuss Christian ethics in relation to artificial intelligence and recent efforts led by the Vatican to place ethical demands on artificial intelligence.

This Sunday, May 10, discussion will focus on an article, “Class, Polarization, and the Common Good”, by David Brooks.

Sympathy

Our sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Thelma Stalcup, wife of the late Bobby Stalcup who served as SCAPC’s Associate Pastor (1996-2002). Thelma passed away on April 22. A service will be held this Friday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at Covington Presbyterian Church.

We also extend sympathy to Debbie Patrick and John Havens on the death of their father, Prentiss Clement "P.C." Havens, who died on April 22. A memorial service will be held on June 8 at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary.

Finally, we extend our sympathy to Judy Paine and her family on the death of her husband, Lincoln Paine, who died on April 30. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 11 at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary with visitation at 12:30 p.m. in the Bloomfield Room.

YAF PINTS

The YAF PINTS group (Presbyterians Imbibing in Necessary Theological Study) had a great discussion about community last week. Join us for our last discussion-based PINTS of the spring tomorrow, before we end the PINTS semester on Wednesday, May 13 with a Game Night!

Pep Talks From the Challenger Class

Dinner & A Movie

What a thriller! Our Dinner & A Movie night began with dinner at the home of Margaret and Morgan Cross, followed by the movie Michael (Michael Jackson biopic) at the Prytania Theatre. Here the group dons their signature Michael gloves and paddles!
