KGOU's annual financial audit shows strengths and challenges

KGOU has completed its financial audit for the 2023 fiscal year that ended June 30. Such an audit is a requirement to receive our Community Service Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which accounts for about eight percent of our income. In comparing KGOU's other funding sources to the previous year, FY23 again saw a decline of nearly six percent in underwriting revenue from local businesses. Donations from individual supporters, in contrast, increased by seven percent year over year.

The CPB grant and direct support from the University of Oklahoma account for 20 percent of KGOU's operating revenues, while private sources—donations from individuals and local businesses—account for nearly 80 percent. As costs continue to climb, the steadiness of support from our listeners allows KGOU to continue to bring you the shows, news coverage, and the reliable service you expect. Thank you. If you want to dive into the numbers yourself, you can read the full audit report:

NPR 2024 Election Coverage: South Carolina and Super Tuesday primaries

2024 Election Get closer to the issues NPR Network KGOU

The presidential race continues with primaries in South Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 24, Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 27, and then Oklahoma's primary with 13 other states on Super Tuesday, March 5. KGOU will broadcast NPR News special coverage on Super Tuesday starting at 7 p.m. CT. Tune in as the results unfold or follow the liveblog online.

With seemingly little suspense in the 2024 election, NPR's coverage seeks to go beyond the "horse race," focusing extensive attention on the issues voters are concerned with and how the candidates would address them. Complicating matters is the fact that a major candidate faces multiple criminal and civil trials in the courts. NPR Public Editor Kelly McBride has some insights into election coverage in this week's column.

KGOU Readers Club: Jim Thorpe, World's Greatest Athlete

A favorite son of Oklahoma, Jim Thorpe's story is familiar state history, from his rise as a star football player, major league baseball player, and the "world's greatest athlete" at the 1912 Olympics, to having his gold medals revoked over questions about his amateur status. In an updated re-release of his book, author Robert W. Wheeler and his wife Florence Ridlon add to Thorpe's story, drawing on their own efforts to restore his Olympic medals and shining light on a corrupt Indian boarding school system. KGOU's Logan Layden leads our next Readers Club discussion on Monday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m.

About the book

Public media bookshelf:

Sarah McCammon's new book The EXvangelicals

Young blonde woman

Growing up in a deeply evangelical family in the Midwest, NPR political correspondent Sarah McCammon was a true believer—for the most part. But in adulthood, she began to question evangelical teachings as they clashed with her own expanding worldview. Part deeply personal memoir and part investigative journalism, The EXvangelicals: Loving, Living, and Leaving the White Evangelical Church is the story of the massive social movement of a generation leaving the church.
