The Oregon Horse Council is excited to bring back to Oregon the 2-day Awareness course in Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue (TLAER). These sessions are taught by world-renouned expert, Dr. Rebecca (Gimenez) Husted.

This training is open to anyone, but will be specifically geared towards fire department personnel, first responders, veterinarians, search & rescue members, animal rescue specialists, livestock breeders, horse trainers, and any large animal owner that wants to be more prepared. Our organization decided to do this training after we had heard from several first responders that there hadn’t been a course like this in the region and that they needed the training. We have been surprised at the enthusiasm for these trainings – 100 people attended the last session in McMinnville and we expect future courses to sell out as well.

USEF
2019 US Equestrian Annual Meeting Deemed a Success in West Palm Beach, Fla.
US Equestrian’s 2019 Annual Meeting wrapped up on Saturday, January 12, in West Palm Beach, Fla. Beginning earlier in the week on Wednesday, January 9, attendees conducted business in their committee meetings, participated in workshops and panels focused on SafeSport, growing the grassroots, media and marketing, and more throughout the week. At the annual Pegasus Awards presented by Adequan®, Laura Graves was crowned the Equestrian of the Year, while Verdades and Cobra were awarded the International Horse of the Year and National Horse of the Year honors, respectively, at the Horse of the Year Gala presented by Aon. Plus, the General Session presentations by US Equestrian President Murray Kessler, CEO Bill Moroney, and the senior staff gave members and attendees an update on the progress of the Strategic Plan and on 2019 goals for US Equestrian. Catch up on all the action by watching the General Session and panels on demand on USEF Network .

Entering the third year of the Strategic Plan, US Equestrian President Murray Kessler told Annual Meeting attendees that equestrian sport’s national governing body has much to celebrate and more to accomplish.
Morgan Breed Honors at
US Equestrian Convention
US Equestrian honored four breed recipients of the 2018 Pegasus Awards on January 10. The awards are bestowed annually to equestrians for their service to the sport.

This year’s Morgan breed recipients are:
USEF Lifetime Achievement Award: Georgie Green
Richard E. McDevitt Award of Merit: the late Yum Kee Fu
Pegasus Medal of Honor: Ellen Di Bella
Youth Sportsman's Award: Clea Cloutier

The award recipients and their families were joined by AMHA President Mari Sanderson and AMHA Executive Carrie Mortensen for this special occasion.
Safe Sport Update
Very Important!
US Equestrian Announces New Safe Sport Training Requirements
On August 27, 2018, the US Equestrian Board of Directors approved a rule change requiring that effective January 1, 2019 , all US Equestrian (USEF) adult members with a Competing Membership must complete USEF’s Safe Sport Training in order to be eligible to participate in USEF activities. Members can immediately access the free Safe Sport Training directly through their member dashboard or can click here  to learn more.

We encourage members to complete the training as soon as possible. US Equestrian President Murray Kessler stated, “I am very proud of the work done in drafting this proposal and the Board of Directors which approved this critical rule designed to keep our children safe while they enjoy, excel, and advance in our sport.”

The rule has three main requirements. Sections 1 and 2 are already in effect and Section 3 has been added:
1. Every USEF member and Federation Participant* shall abide by USEF’s Safe Sport Policy and the U.S. Center for SafeSport Code of Conduct. *As described by the USEF Safe Sport Policy, a Federation Participant is any USEF member or non-member, who participates in, or attends a USEF-licensed competition or sanctioned event.
2. In order to comply with S. 534, the Protecting Young Victim’s from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017, the USEF Safe Sport Policy, and the Center’s SafeSport Code of Conduct, every USEF adult member and USEF participant, with the exception of the victim, is required to report suspected sexual misconduct within 24 hours to the appropriate authorities and to the U.S. Center for SafeSport.
3. Beginning January 1, 2019, every USEF adult member with a Competing Membership must complete USEF’s Safe Sport Training, as approved by the U.S. Center for SafeSport (the Center).

A 30-day grace period to complete the awareness training will be provided to all members who renew or join on or after December 1, 2018. Members joining prior to December 1, 2018 will have until January 1, 2019 to complete the training. Those who do not complete the training within the grace period will be ineligible to participate in USEF activities, including competitions.

The Safe Sport Policy and the rules that govern it have been created to protect all athletes from misconduct within the sport. This new rule is consistent with our efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of equestrian participants, especially minors. Education and training everyone is crucial to protecting athletes and eradicating abuse in our sport.

Additional information and resources on Safe Sport, how to report sexual and non-sexual misconduct, access to a free training module for parents of equestrian athletes, a Safe Sport FAQ, the Safe Sport Sanction list and more can be found here .

US Equestrian has announced the selection of the 2019 U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Stripes and Stars Teams. The Stripes Team will compete at the 2019 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational Test Event from May 2-3, in New Orleans, Louisiana, against teams from South Africa. The Stars Team will compete at the 2019 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational Test Event from October 31 - November 2, in Las Vegas, Nevada, against Canada.

Following an incredible number of applications received from saddle seat breed members around the country, three Morgan athletes have been selected to the U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Stripes and Stars Teams.

U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Stripes Team-Three-Gaited
• Kerrianne Adamek (Murrysville, Pa.)

U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Stripes Team-Three-Gaited:
• Dawson Archibald (Andover, Kan.)
• Alayna Locascio (Dayton, Ohio)

US Equestrian formed the U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams with the purpose of developing riders for future Saddle Seat World Cup competitions. During years that the Saddle Seat World Cup competition is not held, members of the Young Riders teams will be eligible to represent the United States in other international competitions.Unlike the selection process for the U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team, riders did not attend live tryouts to be selected. Instead, the selection of riders was based on application and video submissions.

The U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams are supported by grants from the USA Equestrian Trust . Additional contribution opportunities can be found by visiting www.usef.org/donate. Select U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders in the dropdown menu.

For additional information or questions regarding the 2019 U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams, please visit www.usasaddleseatworldcup.org or contact Erin DesNoyers, Director National Affiliates, by phone at (859) 225-6977 or via email at edesnoyers@usef.org .
National Museum of the Morgan Horse Update
The Museum Director position was eliminated from the NMMH budget effective December 29, 2018. Therefore, the museum is temporarily closed to all research requests and other collections/archives questions while we transition through a restructuring period. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this adjustment. If you have questions or need assistance during this time, please AMHA at info@morganhorse.com .

The Board of Directors continue to work diligently to ensure the proper placement and continuation of the National Museum of the Morgan Horse. Unfortunately, the previously outlined proposal from the Eastern States Exposition Center (often referred to as “The Big E”) has not proven feasible due to the inability for them to obtain a lead donor for their renovations.

However, AMHA is excited to announce that we are currently in negotiations to establish an exhibit at Pineland Farms located in New Gloucester, Maine. Morgan horse trainer Rick Lane is the resident trainer and visitors to the exhibit will have direct contact and viewing with our beloved breed.

It is a unique opportunity as Pineland Farms has thousands of visitors each year including tour buses with as many as 200 people at a time. Located just a short drive from Portland (where many cruise ships dock for day excursions), the farm is open to the public year round. Visitors will be able to view the exhibit, see live horse demonstrations and pick up materials to assist them in locating all things Morgan once they return to their home state.

In addition to the main exhibit, a research station, a reading room/library and a Walk of Honor Hallway for the many annual AMHA awards (connecting the exhibit area to the banquet facilities which overlook the indoor arena) are planned. We look forward to announcing more details as they are finalized as well as providing an invitation to all for the ribbon cutting of this exhibit.
