Diplomates

Editor's Corner

Stephanie Hook, DPM

Vice President, ABPM

Dear Diplomates,

As always, I hope this edition of the Newsletter finds you well.  Here in Upstate New York, it has been quite an unusual winter as we found ourselves with our warmest February on record with multiple days in the 80s, alternating with freezing days and snow! This certainly wasn’t a year for cabin fever, with over 60 inches less snow accumulation than usual!

I was lucky enough to attend three conferences within four weeks during this very abbreviated winter. It was an absolute honor to meet so many more of our Diplomates. I was also able to meet many residents.

The energy our newest colleagues have for our profession is so refreshing to see.  It was great to see the enthusiasm and excitement on faces as they networked with us “older folk”.  I think we are all aware of the work that is needed to keep our profession strong and allow us to grow, and this enthusiasm and excitement is motivation to keep striving forward. Please consider being a mentor, participating in a shadowing program, or getting involved at your local school or residency. If you already have a strong affiliation with a program and would like to have ABPM come speak or share information, please let us know!

Again, I hope this Newsletter finds you well and enjoying a beautiful Spring season!

APMA House of Delegates Passes ABPM's One Board Proposition!

Recently, ABPM Board Members Immediate Past-President Lee C. Rogers, DPM, Treasurer Brian Lepow, DPM, President Adam R. Johnson, DPM, and past-President William E. Chagares, DPM, successfully submitted and advocated for the passage of Policy Proposition 2-24, calling for the APMA to make it their official policy to support the formation of one certifying board in podiatry. Over 1,400 podiatrists across the country signed the official petition of support prior to the meeting of the House of Delegates. The proposition passed with an approximately 62% of the vote from the House.

This proposition is rooted in the long-running advocacy the Board has undertaken to move the profession forward into the future. A single certifying Board in podiatric medicine and surgery, has been called for many times, including by the APMA itself in its Vision 2015 statement. The policy proposition calls for a One Board Task Force to undertake the study and recommendation of a framework for consolidation of the two boards. Read the full text of the proposition here.

Call for Residency Reviewers

One of the most important components of the CPME residency approval process is the team site visit. The site visit is a peer-review process that helps to enhance the quality of education by assessing a program’s compliance with CPME standards and requirements. CPME is committed to ensuring each evaluator possesses appropriate experience and skills essential to the evaluation process. CPME residency evaluators must be certified by one or both of the specialty boards recognized by the SBRC and should be either program directors or active faculty members of CPME-approved residencies. Prior to participating as a member of a team, evaluators complete a training program and are assigned to a team as trainees under the tutelage of the team chair and the specialty board representatives. The Residency and Fellowship Visits - Invitation for Comments Become a CPME Residency Program Evaluator council pays all expenses incurred during the site visit and a per diem for each travel and on-site visit day. Individuals interested in becoming residency evaluators should submit a letter of interest and current curriculum vitae to their certifying boards. Contact information for the American Board of Podiatric Medicine (ABPM), as well as a description of the ABPM-certified evaluator criteria, can be found at CPME.org/residencyevaluators.

If you are interested in being nominated to serve as a site visit evaluation team member, please submit your CV along with a letter of interest to admin@ABPMmed.org

Congratulations Diplomates

The American Board of Podiatric Medicine would like to congratulate the newest cohort of Board-certified podiatrists, who sat for their certification exam in October of 2022. Board-certification is a point of pride for many practitioners across the medical field, and this is no less true for Doctors of Podiatric Medicine. ABPM Diplomates are those exceptional physicians have been judged by their peers to have demonstrated, via a rigorous examination process, a fund of knowledge and competence in the areas being tested. The Certificate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine is a unique achievement, a step well beyond the mandatory education of the podiatrist or state requirements for licensure.

Congratulations diplomates, and welcome to the American Board of Podiatric Medicine!
