Final Thoughts on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, from Director of Theatre Shawn Riley
|
|
As I sit at my desk waiting for the final performance to begin, I reflect on the musical and what it has meant to me and the Ballard community.
-
The school needed this production to happen. B&B was our first live theatre offering since Radium Girls in October of 2020. The preparation for Xanadu was happening and sadly, the week before we opened, the pandemic shut us down. We were devastated that all the hard work wouldn’t be seen, Tickets had been sold, advertisements were procured, and sponsorships donated. Not only were the cast and crew heartbroken, the school at large was sad as well. The annual musical is looked forward to by the entire Ballard community and its absence was greatly felt.
- The outpouring of love by our audiences has instilled a new hope for the success of the BHS Theatre department. Our young cast and crew, many of whom have never been on the BHS stage, now are part of a long honored tradition. They see that the theatre isn’t just something they can put on their resume – they understand and feel the importance that their art has on their community.
- Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of the Ballard Performing Arts Boosters, the Choir, Band, and Orchestra programs, Jill Hansen, and the numerous parent volunteers who assisted with selling concessions, checking COVID cards, and working the Will Call table, and each and every person who bought a ticket and attended the show.
- On a personal note, thank you from the bottom of my heart to Courtney and Jay for going on this adventure with me. Theatre is truly a collaborative art form and it has been a pleasure working with you two on this show. I look forward to many more.
-
Beauty and the Beast is about accepting people for who they are and creating an inclusive community. The show is both familiar and nostalgic for all of us and watching the audience’s eyes fill with tears with sheer joy at watching these young people create art made all the tough days of rehearsal and set building all worth it.
Closing a musical is always bittersweet. As we say goodbye to this show -- take down the sets and send the costumes to the dry cleaners -- the stage will be a blank canvas waiting to hold another magical production. Stay tuned for what these young people create next. They will astound you, as only young artists can.
Please enjoy the show again here, on our YouTube channel.

Pizza and Pep Night Returns! Wednesday, April 6 from 6-7:45 pm
For the first time in two years, Mr. Gillespie is inviting incoming freshman band students to play pep band songs with Wind Ensemble students. They will start in the gym, learn songs, have pizza, and then hopefully head out to the field to play at the lacrosse game tailgate before the game begins at 8 pm. Parents are invited at 7:15 pm to see the action. Come see first hand how wonderful being a part of the Ballard band community is! See the flyer for details .

Choir
State Solo and Ensemble
The State Solo & Ensemble Competition is on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. This will be the first in-person state competition in 3 years. What an incredible opportunity for our choir students.
Vocal Ensemble (Vocal Jazz), Chamber Choir, Tenor Bass Quartet, and the Lili and Anne duet are competing on Friday (the ensemble day), while several soloists are competing on Saturday, the solo day.
We need parents to help drive carpools to Ellensburg and back on Friday April 29. We will be leaving early Friday morning, Time TBD (7-8 am estimate) and not leaving Ellensburg until about 5 pm on Friday.
Ensemble students who also have a solo on Saturday should consider staying Friday night with a parent/guardian in Ellensburg.
Please reach out to choir reps Lori and Stuart Onstad at bpabchoirrep@gmail.com if you are able to volunteer to drive (include the number of students you can transport) or if you are planning to spend the night with your student in Ellensburg.
We’d love to have you join us!

Coffee Fundraiser
Twice a year we partner with local coffee roaster Caffè Appassionato, the Pacific Northwest’s premier roasting company, to offer a special fundraising opportunity to our students. This spring, for EACH bag of coffee your student sells to family, friends, and neighbors, they will earn a percentage of sales in their student account. Student account funds add up – especially with this fundraiser – and your student can use their student account funds to pay yearly program or class fees and for upcoming camps and trips (they are coming back). What could be easier than selling delicious coffee to friends and family in and around Seattle? (Only chocolate…and we have that too.) More specific details to come, but talk to your student about this fundraiser.
The fundraiser will start April 18, the week after spring break, and ends April 29.
