NATIONAL HORROR MOVIE DAY
National Horror Movie Day happens on October 23 on the National Day Calendar. If you love a good fright, today is the perfect day to promote the beauty and cathartic thrills of being scared by great horror movies.
Halloween is in the air bringing together fans of witches, ghouls, zombies, monsters, spiders, and pumpkins. Stores are filled with everything Halloween fans love. In fact, Halloween is a time when an abundance of horror movies are available for viewing in theatres and on streaming apps.
Horror movies have been around since about 1886 when French filmmaker Georges Melies created a short film called "Le Manoir du Diable" or The Haunted Castle. The film was a mere three minutes long and included witches, demons, and special effects that created supernatural occurrences. Since then, horror movies have evolved into different genres that consist of common elements.
3 Main Horror Movie Genres
- Fear and suspense horror movies aim to make the audience feel fear or anxiety. They often use suspenseful build-ups, jump scares, and eerie atmospheres to achieve this.
- Supernatural or paranormal horror films involve supernatural or paranormal phenomena such as ghosts, demons, monsters, vampires, zombies, or otherworldly forces. These elements often serve as the source of fear.
- Psychological horror movies delve into the psychological aspects of fear by exploring themes like insanity, obsession, or the breakdown of the human psyche. Movies like Psycho and The Shining are examples of psychological horror.
Horror films have been a significant part of movie culture with classic and influential works that continue to captivate audiences. The goal of any good horror movie is to elicit strong emotional responses from the audience, including fear and anxiety to shock and disgust. While some people watch horror movies for the adrenaline rush and excitement, others enjoy them for the psychological aspect horror movies offer.
What makes a good horror movie?
Every horror movie capitalizes on the fear of being isolated or trapped in a terrifying situation with no escape. Locations are always isolated or remote, like haunted houses or remote cabins. The survival of a character or characters depends on their resourcefulness and how resilient they are while finding and escape.
A good horror movie knows music plays a critical role in creating unnerving tension. In fact, the right kind of music and sound can heighten a scene and scare anyone who is watching. One of the most defying moments in horror movie history was the music and sound effects playing during the film Psycho. Without the effects of spine-chilling sound and music, Psycho would have been just another film.
All horror movies carry a dark theme that explores death, taboo, madness, or the afterlife. Oftentimes, horror movies also include social fear and anxiety with characters to heighten the fear factor. However, dark themes are never complete without the effect of makeup and visual effects to create terrifying creatures and gruesome scenes for the characters. A combination every horror movie requires.
5 Popular Horror Movies of All Time
- The Exorcist (1973) is a classic horror movie that follows the possession of a young girl and the attempts to perform an exorcism on her to remove a demon from her body.
- Halloween (1978) introduced the iconic slasher villain Michael Myers, who follows a babysitter on Halloween night. This iconic horror movie would eventually transition into 12 additional films.
- The Shining (1980) is a movie based on the Stephen Kings novel The Shining. The movie tells of a writer who goes mad while taking care of a remote hotel during the winter.
- The Conjuring (2013) is a movie based on a true story by the real-life investigations of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
- Hereditary (2018) is a psychological horror flick that enters the theme of family trauma and the supernatural. Hereditary has received critical acclaim for its unsettling atmosphere and earie portrayal of characters.

abjure
/əbˈjo͝or/
Definition: to formally renounce or reject a belief, cause, or claim, often under oath.
Origin: from Middle English, derived from Latin "abjurare," meaning "to swear away."
Example: After much contemplation, she decided to abjure her former political affiliations and embrace a more progressive ideology.
"Renounce" perfectly encapsulates the meaning of "abjure." To abjure something involves a formal and often solemn rejection of a belief, ideology, or commitment, reflecting a deep and intentional decision to no longer support or adhere to it. This term is frequently used in legal or religious contexts, where individuals may abjure previous allegiances or principles. The act of abjuring signifies a departure from past convictions, embodying a significant transformation in one’s beliefs or identity, thus emphasizing the gravity and seriousness of the renunciation.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s! Oktoberfest is an annual tradition that runs for 6 weeks, every Wednesday and Thursday, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. It starts on Oktober 2, 2024 and ends on November 7, 2024. That’s right… Oktoberfest is so much fun that it spills over into November!
There is a different Oktoberfest meal available each week (while supplies last):
APPETIZERS
- Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfel Sosse 8.75 (German Potato Pancake with Apple Sauce)
- Maultaschen in Brühe mit Gerösteten Zwiebeln 10.95 (German Ravioli in Broth)
- Nürnbergerle 10.25 (3 small Bratwust with Sauerkraut and Pretzel)
- Riesenbrezel 10.00 (Giant Pretzel with mustard)
- Vesper Teller 14.50 (Assorted meats & cheeses served with pickle, radish, onion, mustard and pretzel)
- Weisswurst 10.25 (White Sausage served with pretzel and sweet mustard)
- Wurstsalat 9.25 (Chopped German Salami, Cold Cuts, Cheeses, Pickles and Onion tossed in Vinaigrette)
- It’s the Chef’s Choice which appetizers will be available each week. Stay tuned!
ENTREES & DESSERTS (A different meal is available each week of Oktoberfest.)
- 10/23/24 & 10/24/24 — Schwäbischer Hochzeitsbraten mit Pilzen, Kräutern, Kartoffelpüree mit Geröstetem Knoblauch
- und Meerrettich und Rotweinsoße und Brezel 19.50 (Stuffed Veal Shoulder with Wild Mushrooms, Onions and Fresh Herbs with Roasted Garlic and Horseradish Mashed Potatoes and Red Wine Sauce and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
- 10/30/24 & 10/31/24 — Schweinshaxe, Bayerischkraut und Brezel 21.50 (Pork Hind Shank/Ham Hock, Smothered Cabbage and Pretzel); Apfel Strudel mit Vanille Eis 7.25 (Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream)
11/6/24 & 11/7/24 — Wiener Schnitzel und Geröstet Semmelknödel mit Pilzrahmsoße, Gemischtem Salat und Brezel 19.50 (Breaded Thin Pork Loin and Dumpling with Mushroom Cream Sauce, Salad and Pretzel); Schwarzwälderkirschtorte 7.25 (Black Forest Cake)
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew-up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Middendorf’s Owner Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
- During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). Guests who eat an Oktoberfest meal for all six weeks will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week.
- The full regular menu is also available for guests. So, you can have a German meal, and your friend can have the Thin Fried Catfish. Everyone’s happy!
- Of course, we have a great selection of German beer and liqueur to go with your German meal (see below).
- Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. We’ll have live accordion music every night of Oktoberfest, 4:30pm-8:30pm. In Manchac, David C. Symons will join us. In Slidell, Will Robichaux will play for the 1st week, and then for the next 5 weeks, it will be Greg Speck (aka Captain Squeeze).
- Join in the fun by dressing up in your favorite lederhosen, dirndls and German accessories just like our front of house staff. We’ll have a great variety of hats and souvenirs in our gift shop.

NEW ORLEANS – The Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy today announces the launch of a new rideshare pilot program for Frenchmen Street. The program is aimed at reducing vehicular traffic and improving safety. As one of the major strips in New Orleans for live music and entertainment, Frenchmen Street is often clogged with bumper-to-bumper traffic on this short two-block strip. For this pilot program, the Office of Nighttime Economy has partnered with Uber and Lyft to create rideshare drop-off and pick-up zones around the area to alleviate traffic. Uber and Lyft alone, account for roughly 80 percent of peak weekend traffic, according to their data.
Like other cities, New Orleans is moving toward implementing permanent designated rideshare zones in the future for a safer and more efficient solution to this ongoing problem, so that residents and visitors can enjoy the Frenchmen Street attractions without the hassle. The rideshare pilot program will run from Sept. 26 through Nov. 24 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. During that time, only rideshare pick-up and drop-off traffic will be prohibited from entering Frenchmen Street. All other vehicles will maintain access to the street.
"We’re excited to roll out the Frenchmen Rides initiative for improved safety for both patrons and nightlife workers on Frenchmen Street," said Michael Ince, Interim Director, Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy.
"We look forward to continued collaboration with businesses and other stakeholders as we work to improve the overall experience of Frenchmen Street. I commend Rob Henig Bell, Community Projects Manager, Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy for spearheading this initiative."
The pick-up and drop-off zones are located one block away from attractions, on the river-bound side of Elysian Fields Avenue. Non-rideshare vehicular traffic and pedestrian activity will retain access to the street, allowing for safer, less congested movement along the Frenchmen Street strip.
Designated pick-up and drop-off locations are common internationally and across the country. New Orleans residents are likely to have encountered them at the airport, attending Saints games or during the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Many cities across the country have employed geofencing solutions for busy nightlife strips, similar to Frenchmen Street.
"By putting safety at the forefront, Uber and the City of New Orleans are working together to provide dedicated space for Uber users near one of the city's busiest nightlife streets, while encouraging more shared mobility," said Javier Correoso, Uber Director of Public Affairs.
"Through the Mayor's Office of Nighttime Economy and in deploying tactics from Uber's Nightlife Operating Manual, New Orleans is at the forefront of reimagining what the future of curbside access looks like to best suit the needs of consumers."
The two designated rideshare zones are located on Elysian Fields Avenue, one block off of the Frenchmen strip.
- Zone 1 - 700 Elysian Fields Avenue (next to Washington Square Park)
- Zone 2 - 500 Elysian Fields Avenue (next to Premium Parking lot)
All rides created in the Uber and Lyft app to or from Frenchmen Street, between Esplanade Avenue and Royal Street, will be directed to one of the two rideshare zones.
Signage in these zones will remain ‘as is’ for daytime hours. For designated nighttime hours, signage will be changed to ‘Passenger Zone: No Parking’ with enforcement and penalties levied for violators in accordance with standard violations, which includes ticketing and towing.
For more information and updates, visit: Nighttime Economy - Programs - Frenchmen Rides - City of New Orleans (nola.gov)

An Díaz & Yokatta Brothers
- Wednesday, October 23, 2024
- 2:00 PM 3:00 PM
- New Orleans Jazz Museum
- 400 Esplanade Ave.New OrleansUnited States
An Díaz & Yokatta Brothers is a blues, gospel, and roots quartet founded in 2017. An Díaz, from Argentina, met the Yokatta Brothers in northern France, and together they blend her powerful vocals with the band's roots rhythms in a mix of Blues, Boogie, Jazz, and Gospel. After releasing a few cover albums, they developed their own sound in their first studio album of original songs, which won several prestigious awards, including the first prize at the Blues Challenge at the Rendez-vous de L'Erdre festival.
The album pays tribute to each decade of Blues history, with influences ranging from the 1920s to the 1960s. The songs are deeply personal, with An Díaz reflecting on themes of joy, uncertainty, loss, and existentialism. The album is also a tribute to her sister, who passed away in 2018, making the album both a tragedy and a success. The lyrics and stories behind the songs are available on their website.

Sukkot
What Is Hoshanah Rabbah?
The last day of Sukkot has its own rituals
By My Jewish Learning
Hoshanah Rabbah, the seventh day of Sukkot is a semi-holiday in its own right.
Still counted among the days of Hol Hamoed (intermediate days of the festival), this day’s name means “the great hoshanah.” A hoshanah is a series of seven liturgical poems calling upon God to rescue and redeem the Jewish people, primarily by sending rain.
Hoshanah Rabbah was viewed by the rabbis of the Talmud as a mini-Yom Kippur, a day on which the entire Jewish community is judged by God to be worthy or not of the seasonal rains. All seven hoshanot prayers are recited in seven hakkafot, or processions, around the sanctuary.
At the conclusion of the seven processions, a special ritual is conducted in which the branches of the willow (the aravot) are struck upon the ground. This is a symbolic attempt to rid ourselves of any remaining sins (the leaves representing these transgressions) that might influence God’s decision to send the seasonal rains.
Support My Jewish Learning
On the night before Hoshanah Rabbah, many Jews stay up late to study Torah — some even study Torah the entire night long. It has become traditional to read the Book of Deuteronomy, both because it can serve as a summary of the entire Torah and because it is the last book of the Torah and Jews everywhere are about to conclude the yearly cycle of reading the Torah on Simchat Torah (two days after Hoshanah Rabbah). Some also recite Psalms, and Sephardic Jews also recite Selichot prayers.
On the evening following Hoshanah Rabbah, the festival of Shemini Atzeret begins. While for many Jews, Hoshanah Rabbah is the last day one shakes the lulav and etrog and dwells in the sukkah , a number of traditional Jews continue to dwell in the sukkah through Shemini Atzeret.

Tefillat Geshem: The Prayer for Rain
Recited by Ashkenazi Jews on Shemini Atzeret, this prayer invokes the merit of Jewish ancestors in requesting the natural resource on which all life depends.
By Rabbi Jacob Fine
The earth, like most living things, is primarily comprised of a transparent, odorless, virtually tasteless and colorless fluid we call water. Even though our bodies, the ground, and most of the world we experience seems solid to us, just beneath the surface, water is ever-flowing, moving blood and nutrients and earth, enabling life to grow.
The complete dependence of life on water is powerfully conveyed through the Hebrew root ג-ש-ם (gimel-shin-mem), which can mean both rain and physicality. Lest we forget that we are made up of nearly three-quarters water, the Hebrew reminds us that without geshem (rain), there is no gashmiut (physicality). Or in other words, without mayim (water), there is no chaim (life).
Given the centrality of water to our existence, the prominence of rain and water in the Torah and Jewish liturgy comes as no surprise. In the beginning, God created the world by “separating the waters below from the waters above.” Genesis 1:7 Moses was saved by pharaoh’s daughter, who drew him from the water. Upon seeing Rachel for the first time, Jacob rolled the stone from the mouth of the well and offered her flock water. Genesis 20:10 Our path to freedom from slavery in Egypt went directly through water. The priests in the ancient temple sanctified themselves with water. Prayer, we are told in the Book of Lamentations, involves pouring out our hearts like water. Lamentations 2:19
Tefillat Geshem, the prayer for rain that Ashkenazi Jews recite on Shemini Atzeret, recalls many of these transformative encounters with water. (Sephardic Jews recite a different prayer for rain, Tikkun Hageshem, on Shemini Atzeret.) Recited at the conclusion of the festival of Sukkot and at the traditional start of the rainy season in Israel, the prayer calls upon God to remember the righteousness of our ancestors and to grace us with the gift of flowing water. “For their sake, do not withhold water,” we recite. “For the sake of their righteousness, grant the gift of flowing water.”
Through detailing the many and varied ways that water has played a central role in the defining moments of our ancestors, Tefillat Geshem encourages each of us to consider the defining moments that water plays in our own lives. The imagery of the poem describes birth and death, trials and triumphs, vulnerability and strength, scarcity and abundance — all of which seems to suggest that we too are part of this story, part of the cycle of water, the cycle of life.
Water is always in movement. Since the beginning of creation, it has continuously been flowing in an endless cycle with no beginning and no end, from evaporation to condensation to precipitation to infiltration and back to evaporation. And this cycle is a closed cycle; the rain falling outside the window right now is made of molecules that existed when Abraham and Sarah walked the earth.
It is the movement of water, the flow, that supports life. The soil beneath our feet may be rich and fertile, but without water a plant can’t take up the nutrients it needs to survive. And when plants take up water and nutrients from their roots, they must also release water from their leaves. Absorbing and releasing, receiving and giving, this is the miraculous cycle that has happened every second for millions of years.
We too are part of this flow. From Abraham and Sarah to all of us, the water flowing through us is part of an unbroken chain, a cycle of water that continues to move and nourish and support life. Which is why we invoke the merits of our ancestors when we recite Tefillat Geshem and pray that this same water continues to flow for us, for our children, for all of creation — for blessing, for life and for abundance.
“For you are Hashem our God,” the prayer concludes. “Who causes the wind to blow and the rain to fall. May it fall as a blessing and not as a curse. May it be for life and not for death. May it bring abundance and not famine.”

benign
/bɪˈnaɪn/
Definition: Gentle and kindly; not harmful or detrimental.
Origin: From the Latin word "benignus," meaning "kind" or "good."
Example: The doctor assured her that the tumor was benign and posed no threat to her health.
"Harmless" is the essence of what "benign" signifies. When something is described as benign, it implies that it is not only gentle but also free from danger or risk. For instance, a benign tumor, while it may need monitoring, does not invade surrounding tissues or spread to other parts of the body. In a broader context, the term can apply to actions or behaviors that are non-threatening or beneficial, such as a benign smile or a benign policy initiative. Thus, "benign" embodies a reassuring quality of safety and kindness in various contexts.benign

NATIONAL BOSTON CREAM PIE DAY
National Boston Cream Pie Day serves up a delicious dessert on October 23rd each year. Pie lovers, move along. Cake lovers, pull up a chair. Let's celebrate the cake with an identity crisis! Boston Cream Pie is a chocolate frosted, custard-filled cake that is loved by millions.
In 1856, at Boston’s Parker House Hotel, French chef Monsieur Augustine Francois Anezin created this pudding and cake combination.
The decadent cake comprises two layers of sponge cake filled with vanilla-flavored custard or creme patisserie. The cake is then topped with a chocolate glaze, such as a ganache or sometimes powdered sugar and a cherry.
In 1996, Massachusetts declared the Boston Cream Pie as their official dessert.

⚜️Earl Weber
The Jackson Brewing Company, affectionately known as Jax Brewery, wasn't just another beer maker—it was a cornerstone of New Orleans' vibrant history, shaping the culture and flavor of the South from 1890 to 1974. Nestled in the heart of the French Quarter, this brewery stood as a symbol of resilience and innovation, a testament to the unyielding spirit of its founder, Lawrence Fabacher.
In 1890, Fabacher, a visionary entrepreneur with a knack for brewing and a deep love for his city, established the Jackson Bohemian Brewery. Inspired by the fierce legacy of Andrew Jackson and the historic Jackson Square, the brewery soon adopted the name Jax Beer. Under Fabacher’s bold leadership, Jax Brewery grew into a titan of industry, becoming the largest brewery in the Southern United States at its peak.
As the brewery flourished, it wasn’t without challenges. The dark days of Prohibition loomed over the country, bringing many breweries to their knees. Yet, Jax Brewery stood strong, one of the few to weather the storm alongside its local rival, Dixie Brewery. The post-Prohibition era saw Jax Brewery not only surviving but thriving, with a legal skirmish in 1935 marking its territorial ambitions. The battle over the "Jax Beer" trademark with Jacksonville Brewing Company was more than just a legal tussle—it was a clash of brewing titans. The eventual compromise divided the South into brewing strongholds, with Jax Brewery securing its dominance over the western states.
The 1940s brought expansion, fueled by a surging demand that only a brewery of Jax's caliber could meet. By the 1950s, however, the landscape had shifted. The rise of national breweries threatened Jax’s reign. But, true to its innovative roots, the company struck a deal in 1954, acquiring exclusive rights to the Jax trademark from its Florida rival. This bold move propelled Jackson Brewing Company to new heights, solidifying its place as the 10th largest brewery in the nation and the undisputed king of Southern brewing.
Yet, all great empires face their twilight. By 1974, financial pressures mounted, and Jax Brewery was absorbed by Pearl Brewing Company. The iconic Jax Beer continued to flow until 1984, when Pabst Brewing Company took the reins, blending Jax into its portfolio.
The brewery building remains a treasured landmark in New Orleans and since being redeveloped into condominiums is recognized as the crown jewel of the French Quarter. In 1999, visionary developer Earl Weber saw beyond its brick walls and brewing past, transforming the space into premiere luxury condominiums, upscale retail shops, and fine dining establishments in the French Quarter. Today, the former brewery stands as a symbol of New Orleans' enduring spirit—a place where history meets modern elegance, and where the legacy of Jax Brewery lives on.

Jami Attenberg and Alison Fensterstock - A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN and HOW WOMEN MADE MUSIC
Please join us for a very special evening with writers Jami Attenberg and Alison Fensterstock presenting and signing each of their new books: A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN: A Novel and HOW WOMEN MADE MUSIC: A Revolutionary History from NPR Music.
A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN
From New York Times bestselling author Jami Attenberg comes a dazzling novel of family, following a troubled mother and her two daughters over forty years and through a swiftly changing American landscape as they seek lives they can fully claim as their own.
The women of the Cohen family are in crisis. After the death of their patriarch, Rudy, the glue that held them all together, everyone’s life soon takes a dramatic turn.
Shelly, the younger of the two Cohen sisters, runs off to the West Coast to immerse herself in the emerging (and lucrative) world of technology. Her sister, Nancy, gets married at the age of twenty-one to a traveling salesman with a shadowy lifestyle, while their mother, Frieda, hurls herself into a boozy, troubled existence in Miami, trying to forget the past even as it haunts her.
But each woman must learn in her own way that running from the past can’t save you—and they must make life-altering decisions about what they want their family to be and what they need for themselves to move forward.
Beginning in the 1970s and spanning forty years, A Reason to See You Again takes the reader on a kaleidoscopic journey through motherhood, the American workforce, the tech industry, the self-help movement, inherited trauma, the ever-evolving ways we communicate with one another, and the many unexpected forms that love can take.

swirl newsFNWS
Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, has a fascinating wine culture that's shaped by its unique blend of French and Italian influences, rugged terrain, and Mediterranean climate. Despite being part of France, Italy’s influence on Corsica is profound, shaping the island’s culture, language, architecture, cuisine, and especially its wine traditions. Corsica was under Genoese rule for nearly five centuries (from the late 13th century until 1768), and its proximity to Tuscany and Sardinia also contributed to strong Italian connections.
Most of the Corsican grapes have ties to Italy as well. Nielluccio is Corsica’s most important red grape and is genetically very similar to Sangiovese, Italy’s iconic grape, particularly from Tuscany. Vermentino, known in Corsica as Malvoisie de Corse, is widely planted in both Corsica and Sardinia, as well as in regions of mainland Italy like Liguria and Tuscany. It is thought to have originated from Italy, possibly Liguria, and spread across the Mediterranean. Sciaccarello, another key red grape of Corsica, is believed to be related to Mammolo, a lesser-known grape from Tuscany. Mammolo is often used in blends, such as in Chianti, but in Corsica, Sciaccarello has developed a distinct identity.
Even after France acquired Corsica in 1768, Italian influence remained deeply embedded in the island’s identity. Many Corsicans still feel a closer cultural affinity to Italy than to mainland France, especially given the shared history, language, and food traditions. This dual identity makes Corsica unique within France, with its Italian roots constantly blending with French culture to create something distinct. It also contributes to the island’s distinctive wine style—one that’s both rustic and refined, combining the structure of Italian reds with the elegance of French whites.
Corsican wines are still relatively under the radar, which makes them an exciting discovery for wine drinkers looking for something new and unique. Dave Sobiesk will accompany us on this tour as Artisan Fine Wines has a great selection from the island for us to choose from. I hope you'll join us! Use this link for tickets,Corsica

Johnette Downing - Petit Pierre and His Wild Adventure
Join us for a special story time reading and signing with children's picture book author and musician Johnette Downing as we celebrate the release of her new book, Petit Pierre and His Wild Adventure.
Petit Pierre has made a home for himself on the coast where Louisiana meets Mississippi, and now it is time for him to learn how to plunge-dive. Brown pelicans typically pick up this behavior by watching others do it. Will a potential love interest help Pierre learn how to dive? Young readers will follow his progress and, along the way, find out more about Gulf of Mexico marine life.
“As any nature-lover knows, watching brown pelicans plunge dive is one of the Gulf Coast’s most majestic sights. Joining Pierre as he learns this skill, step-by-step, page-by-page, is inspirational, exciting, and, just like in nature, a joy to behold.” — Rien Fertel, author of Brown Pelican
Johnette Downing is a multi-award winning musician and author who serves up a gumbo of Louisiana roots music and books in a toe-tapping, two-stepping good time for children across the globe. In addition to working with children, she presents keynotes and workshops for educators globally. Dedicated to celebrating childhood, nurturing cultural exchanges, and fostering literacy through her music and books, Downing has performed in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Central America, North America and the Caribbean. Her presentations speak to a child’s interests in an engaging, interactive, thought-provoking, educational, entertaining and culturally respectful way; earning her a reputation for being the “Musical Ambassador to Children” and the “Pied Piper of Louisiana Music Traditions.”

Nickel-A-Dance Fall 2024 Season to Begin on Frenchmen Street
by: OffBeat Staff
The fall 2024 season of Nickel-A-Dance, a beloved free traditional jazz concert series, is set to begin on September 29. For over three decades, Nickel-A-Dance has brought live jazz to the public, offering an afternoon of family-friendly entertainment on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This year, the series moves to a new location at Favela Chic, located at 525 Frenchmen Street, continuing its tradition on this famous music corridor.
Originally started in 1994, Nickel-A-Dance has become a staple for fans of New Orleans jazz who may not frequent nightclubs. It attracts a diverse crowd, including children, families, and seniors, all coming together to celebrate traditional jazz as America’s original dance music. This fall’s lineup will feature some of the city’s most renowned jazz musicians.
The fall series will conclude on October 27 with Gregg Stafford and The Jazz Hounds. Stafford, a respected trumpeter and vocalist, has led several prominent New Orleans jazz bands, including Danny Barker’s Jazz Hounds and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He has dedicated his career to preserving the musical traditions of New Orleans and remains an active figure in the city’s jazz community.

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, October 28
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS - Minrose Gwin
Join us for an evening with author Minrose Gwin when she presents and signs her new novel, BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS.
From Minrose Gwin, award-winning author of The Accidentals, comes Beautiful Dreamers, a story of a precocious teen and her mother, their gay best friend, and the con man who unravels their family.
It’s 1953 when Memory Feather and her mother, Virginia, are welcomed back home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast community of Belle Cote by Virginia’s childhood friend Mac McFadden, whose verve and energy buoy the recently divorced Virginia to embrace this new chapter. Memory (“Mem”) is unlike other girls: she is attuned to the voices of plants and animals and is missing two fingers on her twisted left hand. The three of them knit their lives together and become a close, though unconventional, family.
While Mac’s wealth, brains, and good humor have allowed him to carve out a niche in Belle Cote, his position as a gay man active in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement exposes him to censure, harassment, and even brutality. When the unscrupulous and charismatic Tony Amato arrives in Belle Cote as Mac’s “guest,” he sets in motion a series of events that will shatter familial bonds and forever change Mem’s life. Now, an adult Mem recounts the story of the scars Tony left in her teenage years, confronting her culpability in the disastrous events of that final summer.
Sweeping, dramatic, and vividly rendered, Beautiful Dreamers is a novel of innocence and betrayal, love and intolerance, and the care and honesty we owe the families we choose.
Minrose Gwin is the author of the novels The Queen of Palmyra, a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick and finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award; Promise, which was shortlisted for the Willie Morris Award in Southern Literature; and The Accidentals, which received the 2020 Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters Award in Fiction. Her fourth novel, Beautiful Dreamers, has just been released by Hub City Press. She has also published a memoir, Wishing for Snow, about the collision of poetry and psychosis in her mother’s life, and four books of literary and cultural criticism, most recently Remembering Medgar Evers: Writing the Long Civil Rights Movement. She was coeditor of The Literature of the American South, a Norton anthology, and The Southern Literary Journal. She received the Society for the Study of Southern Literature Richard Beale Davis Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service to Southern Letters and the William Wisdom/William Faulkner Books-in-Process Award for Rescue, the novel she’s working on now.
Like the characters in her novel Promise, Minrose Gwin is a native of Tupelo, Mississippi. She began her writing career as a journalist and later taught at universities across the country, most recently the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was Kenan Eminent Professor of English. She now lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her partner, Ruth Salvaggio, and several loquacious four-leggeds.

Super Bowl LIX may happen more than three weeks before Fat Tuesday, but the host committee wants to make sure the city -- and the throngs of visitors in town for the NFL's championship game -- get the carnival experience.
The day before the game, February 8, there will be a Mardi Gras-style parade complete with elaborate floats, marching bands, and throws.
Our partners at NOLA.com report details of the parade are still being finalized, but float-builder Barry Kern says it will likely be a 20-float parade made up of signature floats from various krewes.
And because it is not an official carnival parade, corporate sponsors will also be a part of it.
Todd Graves, founder of Baton Rouge-based Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers, will serve as grand marshal.
Rather than follow one of the traditional Mardi Gras routes, the Super Bowl parade will line up on Elysian Fields in the Marigny, parade up Decatur Street along the French Quarter, then take Tchoupitoulas St. to Poydras, turn up to St. Charles Ave., then proceed along St. Charles to St. Joseph St. just before reaching Harmony Circle.
